A Comparative Study on the Effectiveness of Supervised Physiotherapy vs Unsupervised Home Exercise in the Management of OA (Osteoarthritis) Related Knee Pain | Chapter 3 | Recent Advances in Science and Technology Research Vol. 8

Knee joint osteoarthritis is a chronic musculoskeletal condition that degenerates cartilage integrity by affecting it. In essence, osteoarthritis is a musculoskeletal condition that mainly happens in the body's cartilaginous portions of the joints. This results in inflammation in the affected joint and intense pain. This study was a cross-sectional study in which osteoarthritic patients were targeted. Using snowballing methods, a population of 300 patients was sampled to find a sufficient number of patients. The patients were then given standardised questionnaires, the Likert scale was used for the questionnaires, and the output was reported in tables. The basic goals were to assess patients' awareness, attitude and behaviours in both supervised and non-supervised physiotherapy, and finally to evaluate the most effective physiotherapeutic intervention between the two. The results showed that supervised physiotherapy reported output as 94, 86 and 96 respectively in awareness, attitudes and practises, whereas it was 52, 51 and 46 respectively for non-supervised. The findings show that controlled physiotherapy provides improved outcomes and faster recovery time. Non-supervised clients have little ability to implement the practises and are likely to do more harm to themselves than good. It is quite imperative from this research that patients are advised to follow supervised physiotherapy that is highly recommended to them. Therefore, it is advised that patients with osteoarthritic knee joint should undergo a controlled physiotherapy treatment that will have a positive effect on their lives.
