Estimation of Thermodynamical Parameters for Cu47Ti34Zr11Ni8 Bulk Metallic Glass | Chapter 4 | Current Research Progress in Physical Science Vol. 8

The study of glass forming ability (GFA) in terms of thermodynamical parameters has recently received adequate attention. It is found that the ease of formation and thermal stability of glasses can be understood by studying the thermodynamical behaviour of undercooled melts. The estimation of temperature dependent thermodynamic parameters; Gibb’s free energy difference (ΔG), entropy difference (ΔS) and enthalpy difference (ΔH) between the undercooled liquid and the corresponding equilibrium solid phases has been proved to be extremely advantageous in the study of the thermodynamic behaviour of bulk metallic glass (BMG) forming melts. Taylor’s series expansion is employed for the estimation of thermodynamical parameters of Cu47Ti34Zr11Ni8 bulk metallic glass (BMG).  A comparative study is also prepared between the result computed on the basis of the present study and the experimental results as well as the results obtained on the basis of various theoretical models. An attempt is also made to correlate the glass forming ability with the reduced glass transition temperature.
