Diabetes, or Madhumeha, is a metabolite disease or a condition in which the glucose level in the blood becomes high over a prolonged period of time. The external secretion of the pancreas is digestive in function, and the internal secretions play a major role in the regulation of metabolism. The hormones which regulate the level of blood sugar are mainly two; glucagon from the alpha- cells and insulin from the beta- cells of the islets of Langerhans. Improper functioning of insulin results in increased sugar level in the blood.
