Determination of Excess Volumes of Binary Liquid Mixtures of Benzene and Carbon Tetrachloride with Cumene and Pseudocumene | Chapter 2 | Recent Trends in Chemical and Material Sciences Vol. 3

At two distinct temperatures, 303.15 and 293.15 K, experimental values of densities (), viscosities (), and ultrasonic velocities for binary mixes of benzene and carbon tetrachloride with cumene and pseudocumene were measured. Data on densities and viscosities were used to determine excess volume of mixing (E), deviation of excess volume (E) from the ideal mole fraction law, and parameter (d) as a measure of strength of interaction between binary mixture components. To estimate the binary coefficients and standard errors, these data were fitted to Redlich-Kister polynomial equations. For binary mixtures of carbon tetrachloride with cumene and pseudocumene and carbon tetrachloride with benzene, excess volumes were found to be negative and positive in sign over the whole mole-fraction range and at both the temperatures 303.15 and 293.15 K. Binary combinations of carbon tetrachloride with cumene and pseudocumene, on the other hand, were found to be negative across the full mole-fraction range at T = 293.15 K, with the exception of the binary mixture of carbon tetrachloride with benzene. Excess volumes that are positive for three combinations (carbon tetrachloride with benzene, cumene, and pseudocumene) indicate that molecular interactions between the components are weak. The negative value of for binary mixes of carbon tetrachloride with cumene and pseudocumene, on the other hand, indicates that the components have weak interactions. Flory's hypothesis has been applied to the experimental values of surplus volumes of mixing (E).
