Microwave Absorption and Shielding Mechanisms in Micro-cellular Foamed Conductive Composites | Chapter 7 | New Horizons of Science, Technology and Culture Vol. 4

Protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI) has remained a pervasive challenge for almost two decades. For these reasons, research efforts have focused on the design and fabrication of efficient EMI shielding materials. This chapter investigates the mechanisms of microwave absorption in microcellular foamed conductive composites designed for protection or shielding against electromagnetic interference. A multi-layered electromagnetic one-dimensional (1D) model mimicking the microcellular foam structure is built and validated using previous measurements on various fabricated composite foams. This model helps to perform a parametric analysis of the absorption behaviour in a foamed composite, using the following parameters: the size of the hollow cell, the thickness of the cell’s wall, its conductivity, the overall thickness of the composite, and the frequency. The foamed composite materials that serve as a reference for the validation of the proposed model were fabricated using a supercritical CO2 process. Three different polymer matrices were considered as examples in this work, i.e., polycarbonate (PC), poly-caprolactone (PCL), and polypropylene (PP). These investigations demonstrate that multiple reflections of the microwave signal between the cellular walls are not the main mechanism responsible for absorption. However, they are often reported as a cause of enhanced absorption in the literature. On the contrary, this work demonstrates that the enhancement of the absorption observed in the foamed conductive composite compared to the unfoamed composite is mainly due to the presence of air in the micro-cells of the composite. The associated electromagnetic shielding efficiency of the foams for practical applications is also discussed. As a whole, the chapter provides a comprehensive study of the performance of composite foams that can help to protect modern communications systems, IoT devices, and living systems from spurious electromagnetic radiations that can interfere with.

Modelling Treatment by Adsorption from Waste Water Using Artificial Neural Network and Multiple Linear Regressions (MLR) Approaches | Chapter 8 | Chemical and Materials Sciences: Developments and Innovations Vol. 5

Artificial neural networks (MLP-ANN) and multiple linear regressions (MLR) models were used for predicting the dynamic adsorption of the complex system of adsorbent adsorbate in the solid-liquid phase. A structure of 09 neurons in the input layer, 16 neurons in the hidden layer, and 1 neuron in the output layer was built.

According to the statistically obtained result for the ANN model in terms of root mean square error (RMSE= 0.0521) and correlation coefficient (R = 0.991), the ANN presents a powerful tool and gives more significant results than the MLR model.

Advancing Geohazard Mapping and Monitoring Using Terrestrial LiDAR: Insights from the British Geological Survey | Chapter 2 | Geography, Earth Science and Environment: Research Highlights Vol. 9

Geomatics is defined in the ISO/TC 211 series of standards as the discipline concerned with the collection, distribution, storage, analysis, processing and presentation of geographic data or geographic information. It is the discipline of electronically gathering, storing, processing and delivering spatially related digital information; it continues to be one of the fastest expanding global markets, driven by technology. The British Geological Survey (BGS) geomatics capabilities have been utilised in a variety of scientific studies such as the monitoring of actively growing volcanic lava domes and rapidly retreating glaciers; coastal erosion and platform evolution; inland and coastal landslide modelling; mapping of geological structures and fault boundaries; rock stability and subsidence feature analysis and geo-conservation. In 2000, the BGS became the first organisation outside the Mining Industry to use Terrestrial LiDAR Scanning (TLS) as a tool for measuring change; paired with a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), BGS were able to measure, monitor and model geomorphological features of landslides in the United Kingdom (UK) digitally. Many technologies are used by the BGS to monitor the earth, employed on satellites, aeroplanes, drones and ground-based equipment, in both research and commercial settings to carry out mapping, monitoring and modelling of earth surfaces and processes. Outside BGS, these technologies are used for close-range, high-accuracy applications such as bridge and dam monitoring, crime and accident scene analysis, forest canopy and biomass measurements and military applications. Key methodologies in TLS are discussed under the headings of Mobile Mapping, Monitoring Change, Virtual Outcrop Modelling and Uncrewed Technologies, featuring examples of work for each. This research underscores TLS's transformative potential in geosciences, particularly for advancing disaster resilience, environmental monitoring, and geological conservation efforts. Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) offers high-resolution, three-dimensional data collection capabilities that can significantly enhance our understanding of geological processes and environmental changes.

The aim of this chapter is to review the types of work that the BGS carries out using terrestrial and aerial LiDAR systems, and to discuss the merits therein.

Study of Dynamic Adsorption from Wastewater into Mineral Activated Carbon Using Artificial Neural Network | Chapter 9 |Current Approaches in Engineering Research and Technology Vol. 10

Water bodies are the most common natural resources that have been contaminated as a result of different human activities. Actually, in industries various methods of treatment of wastewater and many adsorbent materials used for purification of effluents have existed. An artificial neural network (ANN) was used in this study to predict the removal of sodium decanesulfonate using actived carbon obtained by the calcination of mineral biomass under different conditions. The structure of [3-3-1] was obtained and given a good correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.9965) with root mean squared error (RMSE = 0.0276). For the stage of interpolation and extrapolation, the results present a high correlation coefficient close to 1 which provides the robustness and the high capacity of ANN developed model.

ICEV Recycling in Environments with Limited Conventional Energy: Insights from a Queuing Model | Chapter 9 | Theory and Applications of Engineering Research Vol. 7

Nowadays Sustainability is a huge issue. Sustainability deals with the need for the protection of the natural environment and ecosystems health and requires innovation and commitment with the future. This manuscript presents an economic supported decision process  modelled through a  M|G|∞  queue system (M means that arrivals follow a Poisson process, G (general) that the service time can follow any probability distribution, and  ∞ that there are infinite servers) to help to choose if either ICEV-Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles, normally cars but not only, turn idle when conventional energy becomes scarce, or a new status quo is required. In such a case, they are recycled, becoming either EV-Electric Vehicles or HEV-Hybrid Electric Vehicles or FCEV-Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles, or are dismantled (DV-Dismantled Vehicles). Our model shows that when the rhythm ICEV become EV, HEV, FCEV and DV is greater than the rate at which they get idle the system tends to balance. In a cost-benefit analysis perspective, there are minimum benefits above which, both dismantling and recycling, are interesting. Additionally, the most interesting is the one for which the minimum benefit is the least.

Prediction of the Effect of GGBFS on the Hydration of Cement Using Extended CEMHYD3D Model | Chapter 2 | Theory and Applications of Engineering Research Vol. 5

The study presents important findings on predicting the behavior of a Portland cement-based mixture, specifically regarding hydration. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), often called slag cement, fly ash (FA), and silica fume (SF) are widely used in cementitious composites due to their durability, environmental friendliness, and minimal cost. Portland cement is usually substituted with granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) to make a blended cement. A slag-blended cement has a more complicated hydration process than Portland cement due to the interactions between the slag reaction and the hydration of Portland cement in the cementitious systems. Understanding the effect of slag substitution on the hydration of cement is still challenging. To achieve this, the extended CEMHYD3D model was employed to predict the hydration of a slag-blended cement. An OPC as a reference cement confirmed to ASTM C 150 and a slag confirmed to ASTM C 989 standard requirements were used in this study. The simulation was done with cement paste samples made with various w/c ratios and different slag substitution levels, in which the interaction between the hydration of Portland cement and the reaction of slag was considered. The prediction model has been validated with experimental results and verified to be successful in predicting the hydration of slag-blended cement. The consideration of the chemical composition of slag improves the predictability of hydration in cement, and the same method was applied in this model. Both in the early age and up to the age of 90 days, the hydration of slag-blended cement can be predicted with the proposed model.

Numerical Investigation on Vibro-acoustic Responses of a Satellite| Chapter 1 | New Trends in Physical Science Research Vol.7

Currently, either the highly computational finite element (FE) approach or the imprecise statistical energy analysis (SEA) method is used to create a satellite's vibro-acoustic model. Three important technologies—division frequency, damping loss factor (DLF) model, and on-board equipment modeling—are suggested in this work for a combined vibro-acoustic simulation of a satellite. When f>f1, the division frequency (f1) is determined by whether the modes of the components are greater than 5. When all of the components are favoured by SEA when f>f1, hybrid FE/SEA technique is advised with just solar arrays by SEA method and the other components by FE method. Based on the examination of numerous experimental data, the DLF component model was proposed, in which the DLF is opposed to the area-to-mass ratio of components and frequency. It is established that the corresponding DLF of the panel may imitate the on-board equipment using the SEA theory. In comparison to the FE technique throughout the full band, the combined method not only cuts computation time by over 80% but also keeps prediction error to a maximum of 1 dB.

Modelling Study on Evaporative Freezing Process of Water Droplet in Artificial Snowmaking | Chapter 08 | New Trends in Physical Science Research Vol. 1

A modelling study on the evaporative freezing process of water droplets was carried out in this paper in order to better understand artificial snowmaking and, as a result, to improve machine design. To accomplish this, mass and heat transfer theoretical models of a single water droplet cooling in an air space were devised and implemented in a numerical model created with the software COMSOL Multiphysics. On this process, the impacts of air temperature, relative humidity, and velocity, as well as the initial diameter and temperature of water droplets, were found and analysed, and their optimum ranges for snowmaking were determined.

Modeling and Parameters Identification of PEM Fuel Cell for Application to a Hybrid Vehicle System | Chapter 5 | Research Trends and Challenges in Physical Science Vol.8

In this chapter, we are interested in the research of fuel cell instrumentation, particularly that of the proton exchange membrane type PEM, by measuring complex impedance in order to predict faults and avoid serious stack problems such as drowning or reversal phenomena. As a result, this paper examines the vehicle's model description, with a focus on the Powertrain's design and modelling. The fuel cell vehicle's power system includes a fuel cell, a DC/DC converter, a three-phase inverter, and a PM synchronous motor. Our goal is to reduce the amount of hydrogen used by a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell. To achieve this purpose, the system is regulated by an Energy Management Strategy (EMS), which minimises fuel cell power demand transitions and so enhances the system's longevity. For the NEDC, the suggested energy management strategy is assessed (New European Driving Cycle). The obtained findings show that the proposed energy management technique is effective in reducing hydrogen use.

Design and Implementation of an Optimal PV Solar Generator in Tropical Zone | Chapter 03 | Novel Perspectives of Engineering Research Vol. 2

Many small businesses, other organisms, and rural populations, particularly in developing countries, do not have easy access to the grid, necessitating the use of decentralised electric sources, which are critical in some situations, such as supplying rural hospitals or pumping potable or irrigation water. Electric Solar Generators Technologies may be able to save the day in a major way. This article examines essential issues in the design and deployment of a PV Solar Generator. In this regard, we conducted a state-of-the-art study in the domain of Solar Electric Generators, which provided key parameters of each component of a safe, easy-to-maintain feeding solar system and led us to the design, notably through the software PVSyst, of a domestic flat PV solar generator, as well as the implementation and testing of a domestic flat PV solar generator. Among the decentralised power production methods such as generating units, a PV panel's generator with batteries appears to be the most advantageous. The results are made up of planned schematics, tables, and curves of simulated and investigated electric quantities such maximum delivered powers and efficiency. An example of a fully installed PV system that was instrumented for data logging was presented in the article. To power real loads, the system comprised a battery and an inverter. The size of the PV array, battery capacity, inverter power rating, and power provided to the loads were all considered when designing the system. The logged data has been utilised to assess the intended system and give recommendations on how the design could be improved so that systems of this sort can best serve local needs.

Computational Modelling of Lead Based Mixed Halide Perovskite Solar Cells: An Advanced Study| Chapter 12 | New Visions in Science and Technology Vol. 3

Due to substantial breakthroughs in renewable energy and solar cell technology, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as a bright spot in the photovoltaics area. Despite the fact that this relatively new technology has a bright future in terms of utilising solar energy to generate power, its cost-effective commercialization will necessitate additional research. By reproducing experimental situations in a virtual environment, computational modelling and simulation studies can be used to estimate the efficiency and stability of PSCs. The SCAPS-1D software is used to simulate and analyse the performance of different Perovskite Solar Cells (PSCs) with different back contact metals, electron transport layers, and hole transport layers. Using IGZO and CuSCN as the electron and hole transport layers, this study presents the performance of PSCs with mixed halide perovskites, CH3NH3PbI3-XBrX for X=1,2, as absorber layers. The study's major goal is to find the device configuration with the optimum photovoltaic parameters and then use a modelling study to improve the device's performance even more. With a PCE of 15.40 percent and an FF of 65.69 percent, the device configuration FTO/IGZO/CH3NH3PbI3-XBrX/CuSCN/Au for X=1 has the best performance. The optimum defect density for the CH3NH3PbI3-XBrX absorber layer with X=1 is found to be 11014 cm-3. The optimum dopant density for PSCs with CH3NH3PbI3-XBrX as the absorber layer and X=1 is found to be 1.01014 cm-3.

Determining the Importance of Polarity Change in the Electrical Discharge Machining | Chapter 6 | New Visions in Science and Technology Vol. 3

The polarity change in spark erosion is still a concern, and it is frequently done in an arbitrary or unjustified manner. The removal electrode must be given the polarity indication first. This is often the cathodic workpiece electrode in EDM. The goal of this chapter is to describe the removal circumstances on the anode and cathode, as well as to explain how both electrodes' removal behaviour changes over time. The reversal point of the pulse duration may be established as a result of this, which is significant for the electrode material combination, the process energy source (PES), and the load circumstances. In order to validate the phenomenological models, experimental results with copper, aluminium, and iron are evaluated in combination with the same and various electrode materials. In the second stage, literature references are reviewed with the goal of determining whether or not there has been a polarity shift. The direct polarities are chosen largely to optimise removal while minimising wear. Second, reversal polarities are employed in finishing to achieve reduced surface roughness. A high level of wear must always be accepted in these applications, which account for the vast majority of the literature. The polarity of the PES and/or the load conditions of the PES is almost never mentioned in the literature, which leaves out a crucial aspect in the explanation of the results. The utilisation of electrical discharge in conjunction with other machining methods, such as electrochemical machining, necessitates a polarity change as well (ECM). An further impacting component is the primary removal process.

Study on Thermomagnetic Conversion of Low-grade Waste Heat into Electrical Power | Chapter 6 | Newest Updates in Physical Science Research Vol. 8

This chapter presents a theoretical analysis based on the thermal modelling of a Curie wheel, which is used to convert low-grade waste heat into electrical power. It enables designers to better understand the thermal behaviour of a Curie wheel in steady-state operation. A stationary one-dimensional analytical thermal model based on a Lagrangian technique was created to achieve this goal. It enables the determination of the temperature distribution in a magnetocaloric material exposed to a periodic sinusoidal heat source throughout time. The impacts of several parameters (the nature of the magnetocaloric material, the nature and temperature of the fluid) were determined and analysed using this model.

Relationship between Rainfall Variability and Millet (Pennisetum americanum L.) and Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L) moench.) Yields in the Sudan Savanna Ecological Zone of Nigeria: A Modelling Approach | Chapter 5 | Cutting-edge Research in Agricultural Sciences Vol. 10

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between rainfall variability parameters and millet (Pennisetum americanum L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L) moench.) yields in Nigeria's Sudan Savanna ecological zone. Daily rainfall, millet, and sorghum yield data collected by nearby stations between 1981 and 2010 were used as input in the model. It aims to create a model that can predict millet and sorghum yields based on rainfall data. The following analytical tools were used to develop and test the model's performance: ogive of cumulative pentad rainfall, product - Stepwise multiple regression analysis, moment correlation coefficient (r), and coefficient of determination (R2). Four yield forecast models were developed as a result of the research: three for millet in Kano, Katsina, and Potiskum, and one for sorghum in Potiskum. Assuming the best-fitted yield forecast models, the model accounted for 61.7 percent of the variation in millet yield related to total yearly rainfall and 68.1 percent of the variation in sorghum yield related to total rainfall in May. The 38.3 percent unaccounted variation in millet yield and 31.9 percent variation in sorghum yield suggest that other factors may influence the yield variability of the two crops.
