A Case of Aspergillus fumigatus Infection in Emu Chicks | Chapter 9 | Advanced Research in Biological Science Vol. 6

The phase documents a case of Aspergillus fumigatus infection in Emu chicks in an Emu farm of northern Kerala. Aspergillosis is a affliction caused by a leaven belonging to Aspergillus species. Seven Emu chicks in the age groups of individual week to seven weeks endure the Clinical Laboratory, Neighborhood Veterinary Centre, Palakkad District, from an Emu farm in Northern Kerala (Palakkad region) during 2010 made the materials for investigation. Itemized post mortem was administered and gross lesions were recorded. Heart ancestry and pieces of liver tissue were civilized in Sabouraud’s Dextrose Agar (SDA) aerobically at room hotness. Lungs along with lump and liver were processed for lacto phenol understand blue staining and with ten per insignificant value potassium hydroxide solution for direct test.On examination, numerous narrow greyish white growth were seen in the body parts, air sacs, kidney and serosal surface of proventriculus. Dark red liver accompanying necrotic fields and dark coloured spleen were the other lesions.  Microscopically the bronchi revealed granulomas accompanying central areas of clotting surrounded by mononuclear cells and fibroblasts. PAS definite fungal hyphae could be visualized in the lesion.  In conclusion, the study established that control measures should should at the prevention, as there is no active treatment for this disease. The labeled infection in the Emu farm maybe controlled by fumigation of hatchers utilizing potassium permanganate and formaldehyde and sanitization of seeds before setting them in the brooder, using seed sanitisers.
