In 2014, the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) published a survey on the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the residential construction industry. Their research found that, while BIM was not commonly used in the residential market at the time, there was increasing interest in its potential use. Prof. Ghosh Dastider and Matt Jefferies used a similar analysis approach four years later, in 2018, to examine any improvements in BIM's application in the residential sector after the initial study in 2014. The authors contacted a number of local and national designers and contractors to gather information about how BIM was used in the projects they were working on. They gathered, tabulated, and analysed data from 296 residential projects and compared it to the previous research. The data revealed a substantial increase in the use of BIM in the multifamily residential sector. It was also found to be more widely used in architecture and design-build companies, as well as non-design phases such as construction and life cycle analysis. Based on these findings, the authors concluded that BIM's applications in the residential construction sector are very likely to accelerate in the coming years, beyond design and construction.
