Biodiversity of Benthic Macroinvertebrates and Water Quality of the Boufekrane River, Meknes Morocco: Practical Guide to Water Biomonitoring | Chapter 8 | International Research in Environment, Geography and Earth Science Vol. 5

 A research was performed on the effect of anthropogenic activities on the distribution and biodiversity of benthic macroinvertebrates and the Boufekrane River (Meknes) water quality. Four pristine upstream stations and two downstream stations receiving anthropogenic effects were chosen along the river. Based on the SEQ-V.2 scoring system , the water quality index groups, the upstream stations showed significantly higher biological monitoring scores and better water quality indices for 12 consecutive months (from January to December 2010) than the downstream ones. The individualization of the physico-chemical system is actively involved in four variables: COD, dissolved oxygen, TSS and temperature. At the upstream stations, the total number of macrobenthic taxa and their general wealth indices and diversity indices were substantially higher than at the downstream stations. The study of biotypology (PCA and FCA) and the study of Pearson correlation showed that The indices of richness and diversity were usually affected by the total suspended solids, the demand for chemical oxygen and the electrical conductivity of the river water. This research also highlighted the effects of anthropogenic behaviour on macrobenthic invertebrate distribution and species diversity. Some susceptible (Trichoptera and Ephemeroptera) and resistant (Oligochaeta such as Tubifex sp.) organisms are defined in Morocco rivers as potential bioindicators of clean and polluted river ecosystems, respectively. The data obtained in this study supported the use of the concept of bioindicators (Innovative Biotechniques for water quality control) for rivers in North Africa because it is more successful.
