Over the last few decades the major sources of agricultural growth have been diffusion of improved varieties, intensification of input usage and investment in modern technology. In areas where the green revolution had its major impacts, growth form these sources is now slowing down. The latest technologies are needed to push out the yield frontier, utilize the inputs more efficiently and diversify to more sustainable and higher valued cropping patterns to realize more farm income. These intensive technologies require strong research-extension-farmer and market linkage mechanism to achieve the desired outputs. The links between research, extension and farmers often weaken over time. The lack of a close working relationship between agricultural research and extension system and with different categories of farmers and farm organizations, is one of the most difficult problems. This ineffective link between research and extension has hindered the developing and transferring of technology appropriate for small resource poor farmers in heterogeneous agro-ecological area. This study deals with different types of markets, challenges with the formal market for rural small-scale farmers, factor to be considered in linking farmers to markets, Market Linkage approaches, the major types of linkage and their utilities, the reason for linkage failure, linkage principals and mechanism. After systematic analysis various approaches can be used to strengthen linkage between research-extension farmers and the market. This study provides an overview of the markets, various factors to be considered while developing projects that link smallholders to trade options and approaches to strengthening smallholders’ access to markets.
