Principles and Constructs of Environmental Pollution Studies | Book Publisher International

 

This book is entitled ‘Principles and Constructs of Environmental Pollution Studies’. Though it talks more about water and the atmosphere, some concepts of waste management were properly elucidated. The challenges associated with the global anthropogenic inputs cannot be over-emphasised. This book is centred on environmental pollution, particularly water, atmospheric composition, waste and waste management, food additives and preservatives. The need to give more detailed information and concepts of environmental studies necessitated the birth of this compendium. This book gives easier and well-understood meanings and definitions of salient concepts such as climate change, global warming, the greenhouse effect, acclimation, pollutants, contaminants, additives, and preservation. Some of these additives have been found to be lethal and toxic to humans. There is a need for undergraduates, graduates, environmentalists and lovers of the environment to read about the conservation of the ecosystem as shown in this book. This is because the environment remains our only inheritance and legacy for the present and future generations so as to attain sustainable development.

A Review of Quality of Roof-harvested Rainwater in Urban Areas | Chapter 6 | Novel Perspectives of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences Vol. 7

 The main objective concerning this study was to the kind and quantity of roof-picked rainwater. This work thought-out the quality of roof-composed rainwater. There are three main stages in ceiling-collected pure liquid hydrogen and oxygen. Rainfall flushes contaminants from aerosols and gases exhausted the urban air in the first stage. The second stage is the catchment, where contamination results from the wash-off of debris that has grown on the surface of the roofing matters. The first-flush, storage, and probing system are refer to as the third stage. Different processes occur at each stage, accumulating specific contaminators to the initially collected water. Only in the after second stage, after discarding the extreme-polluted beginning rainwater, can some tangible processes (such as sedimentation and pH discipline) enhance the quality of the pure liquid hydrogen and oxygen harvest.  This method specifies a clear picture of the overall contamination processes that happen in a rainwater reaping system. According to a all-encompassing examination of earlier experimental studies, the most frequent physicochemical and microbiological contaminators that can be detected in pure liquid hydrogen and oxygen collecting plans were taken into report, along with the potential presence of waterborne pathogens and expanding chemical contaminators. A common conclusion from miscellaneous studies addressed in this place study is that harvested pure liquid hydrogen and oxygen needs to be treated before use for guzzling purposes. In general, rainwater reasoning in the reviewed studies point out to agreeable values of physicochemical limits. The values obtained for the microbiological limits indicate a tide when water is lowest quality and afterward a high health risk. In order to meet the flags required for consuming purposes, point-of-use systems such as UV lamps or upper layer of atmosphere disinfection are urged.

Critical Study of the Diversity and Abundance of Nematodes in Pollution Prone Urban and Rural Areas of Thiruvananthapuram District in Kerala, South India | Chapter 10 | International Research in Environment, Geography and Earth Science Vol.3

 Nematodes represent a very abundant group of soil organisms in the food web and are important for

soil quality. In the present study, the diversity of nematodes in the soils of urban and rural areas of
Thiruvananthapuram District was noted and their densities calculated. Different categories of land use
areas (coastal area, sewage disposal area, industrial area, road-side area, agricultural area, gasoline
station area and market area) in rural and urban parts of Thiruvananthapuram District receiving
different types of contaminants were selected after conducting a reconnaissance survey. Control
stations which are in a benign environment were also identified in both rural and urban areas of
Thiruvananthapuram District in Kerala, South India. Soil samples were collected in pre-monsoon,
monsoon and post-monsoon seasons during the period April 2009 to January 2010 from the selected
stations. The soil nematodes were identified and their abundance calculated following standard
procedures. The results showed that the soils in the market area are having the highest nematode
abundance and diversity index. It was also noted that the nematodes were scarce in the soils of
gasoline station area contaminated with hazardous wastes and chemicals which will unfavorably
affect the nematode population. The nematode abundance in the soils of the study stations are in the
order: market area > sewage disposal area > agricultural area > benign environment > industrial area
> road-side area > gasoline station area > coastal area. The present study showed that the
nematodes can act as bioindicators of pollution as their numbers diminished in contaminated soils.

Nanoparticles in Environmental Clean-up | Chapter 9 | Recent Progress in Microbiology and Biotechnology Vol.1

 In the last few decades, nanotechnology has occupied significant domain in the scientific realm

because of its multidisciplinary nature. The enhanced properties and suitability of nanoparticles
makes them to use in various applications in different field. The use of nanoparticles in environmental
remediation is particularly suitable due to its high surface area to volume ratio that results in high
reactivity. This chapter mainly describes the inorganic, carbon and polymer based nanomaterials for
use in treating various contaminants of the environment.
