Antihyperglycemic Effect of Different Fractions of Methanol Extract of Ceiba pentandra Leaves | Chapter 4 | Pharmaceutical Research - Recent Advances and Trends Vol. 4

The present study investigated the antihyperglycemic effect of different fractions of methanol extract of Ceiba pentandra leaves. Chronic hyperglycemia during diabetes causes glycation of body proteins that in turn leads to secondary complications affecting e, kidneys, nerves and arteries. Petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol fractions of Ceiba pentandra leaves were prepared and administered individually at different doses to different batches of rats (both normal and alloxan diabetic rats) after an overnight fast. The blood glucose levels were measured at 0, 2, 4 h, 7 and 14 days after the treatment. The antihyperglycemic activity of Ceiba pentandra leaves was compared with the treatment of glibenclamide, an oral hypoglycemic agent. The results indicate that C. pentandra possesses significant antihyperglycemic activity. All fractions except petroleum ether fraction even if with a different degree, have shown significant reduction in blood glucose levels in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The methanol fraction has shown maximum effect in all the two tests compared to the other extracts. The methanol fraction of Ceiba pentandra at a dosage of 200 mg/kg body weight shows a maximal blood glucose lowering effect in diabetic rats.

Exploration of Phytoconstituents, Antitubercular & Antimicrobial Potential of Acclaimed spices-Ceiba pentandra and Parmotrema perlatum | Chapter 3 | Current Overview on Pharmaceutical Science Vol. 7

Ceiba pentandra and Parmotrema perlatum flowerless plant are two illustrious spices. Ceiba pentandra is usually known as Kapok belongs to the family Malvaceae. Apart from their worth as aromas, these are more known for their healing properties. Both are well-known appetisers. Decoctions of these powders are used to treat coughs, eating disorder, and helminthiasis, among different ailments. Although skilled have been several studies on the antimicrobial actions of these two plants, there have existed very few studies on resistant microorganisms and antagonistic-tubercular activity. As a result, me attempted to label the phytochemical constituents present in methanolic and n-hexane extracts of Ceiba pentandra and Parmotrema perlatum utilizing phytochemical tests and the GC-MS method before evaluating decontaminating activity against 5 opposing microorganisms using the microtitre soup dilution method accompanying ciprofloxacillin and streptomycin as remark standards. Methanolic extracts of Parmotrema perlatum and Ceiba pentandra were erect to be more antibacterial than n-hexane extracts, accompanying 90% growth hindrance against H37Rv resistant mycobacterium strains at 80 and 320 micrograms/ml, individually. Both species' n-hexane extracts were associated with weak outcomes against H37 Rv.

Investigation on the Anti-ulcerogenic Effects and Anti-oxidative Properties of Ceiba pentandra Leaves on Alloxan-induced Diabetic Rats | Chapter 8 | Trends in Pharmaceutical Research and Development Vol. 5

It has been shown that many natural products, mainly of plant origin, have promising practises that could help prevent and/or improve disease prevention. Gastric ulcer is a gastrointestinal tract ulceration arising from repeated erosions and stomach wall damage that can become perforated and develop into peritonitis and massive haemorrhage. Objectives: The current research aimed to assess the protective effects of Ceiba pentandra leaves methanol extract on gastric ulcers induced by indomethacin and ethanol and on oxidative stress indices of diabetic rats induced by alloxan. Location and length of study: Department of Biochemistry, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Nature of the study: extraction and administration of graded doses of the extract. State of Enugu, Nigeria, from May, 2011 through October, 2011. Methodology: Ceiba pentandra leaves were extracted using methanol. For each of the ulcer experiments, 20 adult rats, split into five groups of four rats each, were used. In rats, gastric ulceration was caused by oral administration of indomethacin (50 mg / kg) and 95% ethanol (0.5 ml) thirty minutes after extract therapy and sacrificed to animals 8 hours later. Thirty (30) albino rats, divided into six (6) groups of five (5) rats each, were used for the diabetes research. Diabetes was induced by i.p. injection of alloxan monohydrate (150 mg / kg) for two weeks in overnight fasting animals and animals treated with a range of extract doses (100 , 200 and 400 mg / kg). For the determination of lipid profile and liver marker enzymes, serum obtained from the diabetic rats was used. Results: inhibition of severe and dose-dependent ulcers (70, 82 and 84 percent; 19, 53, and 58 percent for 100 , 200, and 400 mg / kg extracts, respectively) were developed for the ulcer models used in all extract-treated classes. Important reductions (p<0.05) were reported in fasting blood glucose, liver marker enzymes, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein and triacylglycerides relative to those of the diabetes-untreated community in the serum of the extract-treated groups. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that Ceiba pentandra leaves methanol extract has good anti-ulcerogenic and anti-oxidative properties and has the potential to be used as a herbal remedy for the treatment of gastrointestinal ulcers and diabetes control.
