Liver Abscess Due to Streptococcus Infection Complicated with Portal Vein Thrombosis: A Case Report and Literature Review | Chapter 11 | An Overview of Disease and Health Research Vol. 1

Background and Aim: Few studies reported liver abscesses complicated with portal vein thrombosis (PVT). Here, the rare case of a patient with a liver abscess caused by

-hemolytic Streptococci complicated with PVT was reported.

Methods: The case and the literature review of liver abscesses with PVT caused by Streptococcus spp were presented.

Case Presentation: A 51-year-old male patient presented with fever and right hypochondriacal pain. He had a 1-month history of watery diarrhoea and bloody stools and was diagnosed with a 15-cm solitary abscess in the right hepatic lobe, which was complicated with PVT;

-hemolytic Streptococci were the predicted causative organism. Percutaneous abscess drainage in combination with antibiotic and anticoagulant therapy led to the successful resolution of the liver abscess and PVT.

Results: To date, liver abscesses complicated with PVT caused by Streptococci have been reported in six cases, including the current patient. The clinical symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, and fatigue. Our review reveals that liver abscesses complicated with PVT have a variable prognosis, ranging from improvement with treatment, such as drainage in combination with antibiotic therapy, to death due to multiple organ failure.
