Mitigating Corruption in Public Procurement: The Role of E-Procurement Risk Strategies in Tanzania | Chapter 2 | New Advances in Business, Management and Economics Vol. 10

Background: The government of Tanzania has started to fully implement an online procurement system since 2020 as an effort to increase efficiency and reduce corruption in the public procurement sector. However, despite these reforms, corruption has persisted in various forms.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effect of e-procurement risk mitigation strategies on preventing corruption in public procurement following the widespread use of bad corrupt practices in the public procurement process.

Methods: The study employed a case study design, and the study population involved 140 staff working at the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and officials working at the Prevention and Combating Corruption Bureau (PCCB). The study employed the Yamane formula to get a sample size of 104 respondents, whereby questionnaires, an interview guide and a documentary checklist were used as data collection instruments, and during administering the tools, all respondents were responsive, which made a response rate of 100%. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (regression model) to determine the effect of e-procurement on preventing corruption in public procurement.

Results: The results indicate that three variables out of five, namely visibility (0.000), risk control (0.016), and political control (0.004), had a p-value < 0.05, which means that these variables significantly contribute to preventing corruption in public procurement under e-procurement.

Conclusion: When public procurement practitioners and suppliers use the e-procurement system effectively, it will prevent physical interactions between the parties, thus ending corruption. In this case, policy makers and decision makers should establish a robust mechanism of preventing corruption in public procurement by digitalising the procurement practices through automating the whole process by using e-procurement technology, as well as integrating all participants and stakeholders. This will establish a transparent procurement process whereby all online transactions are visible to all parties, thus increasing the integrity of procurement practitioners and suppliers on the other side. The awareness campaign and empowerment of institutions and regulatory frameworks will help end loopholes that still tempt corruption in public procurement. This study was limited to two organisations, which may not achieve the principle of study generalisation on corruption in Tanzania. Future research should include a larger and more diverse sample of public institutions across different sectors and regions of Tanzania.

Certain fundamental tenets of good governance are also tenets of anti-corruption. Examining Self-Efficacy and Personality Traits as Predictors of Academic Dishonesty among Undergraduate Students | Chapter 7 | Current Progress in Arts and Social Studies Research Vol. 10

Universities worldwide face a significant challenge: academic dishonesty. This problem extends beyond students, ensnaring even high-ranking personnel like lecturers, department heads, and university/college staff. Various terms describe academic dishonesty, including academic fraud, cheating, and misrepresentation. This paper investigated the forms and prevalence of academic dishonesty among Ghanaian undergraduate students. It also examined how self-efficacy and personality type predict academic fraud within on-campus settings. The study employed a cross-sectional design, surveying 453 students and employed three scales to measure key variables. Descriptive statistics (percentages, means, frequencies, standard deviations) were used to answer the research questions, while standard linear regression tested the hypothesis. The results indicated high levels of self-efficacy and conscientiousness among students, yet academic dishonesty was still present. Conscientiousness, openness, and self-efficacy were found to predict academic fraud. One key implication is that such students may carry the negative habits into their future careers. Academic dishonesty poses a significant threat, not just to individual students but to entire nations. It tarnishes the reputations of both the cheater and the institution, potentially leading to lasting disgrace if exposed. Educators must prioritize understanding the root causes of this academic dishonesty and work to stop it. The paper concluded by examining some strategies for mitigating academic dishonesty within the educational context.

A Brief Study on Institutions, Investment and Economic Growth | Chapter 6 | Modern Perspectives in Economics, Business and Management Vol. 7

Since the 1990s, there has been a revived interest in the function of institutions in promoting economic progress. Indeed, a robust institutional environment can help accomplish economic growth by boosting domestic and international investment. Exactly within this framework, the goal of this chapter is to survey the empirical literature on the subject before moving on to two econometric investigations to test the effects of institutions on a set of countries' economic growth.

The findings of these numerous studies show that institutional factors have a beneficial direct and indirect impact on investment and economic growth. As a result, the work done within the scope of this chapter reinforces the core premise that a healthy institutional framework can only play a critical role in achieving high economic performance and, ultimately, economic growth.

The Arabic Language's Role in Determining Sunnah Corruption | Chapter 10 | Modern Perspectives in Economics, Business and Management Vol. 6

Sunnah refers to the words, actions, agreements, and characteristics of Rasulullah S.A.W. A true understanding of the Sunnah necessitates a thorough investigation of its meaning in both literal and contextual terms. Without referring to the explanation for the hadith's revelation, the literal meaning can be deduced from the Sunnah text. To prevent making mistakes in reading Sunnah texts and committing fraud against Rasulullah S.A.W., good Arabic language skills are required. Understanding the literal meaning of a Sunnah book from a practical standpoint necessitates knowledge of the Arabic language in three areas: word meaning, word meaning based on sentence position, and word meaning based on circumstance. The researcher focused on the importance of Arabic language in determining corrupted Sunnah understandings given in earlier scholars' publications, which were generated by flaws in Arabic language, whether intentional or not. The purpose of this research is to look at the impact of Arabic language in determining Sunnah corruption. The qualitative method was used in this research. Document analysis was used to gather data, with a concentration on books pertaining to Sunnah, Tauhid, and Fiqh. Meanwhile, a textual study was conducted using books from the Arabic language discipline connected to the knowledge of araf, Nau, and Balghah. The main reason of corrupted Sunnah understandings, according to this study, is errors in understanding Sunnah literature from an Arabic language perspective. In terms of effect, when it comes to reading Sunnah texts, a lack of knowledge of Arabic allows the meaning to be derived incorrectly from the exact meaning, and therefore forms the foundation for erroneous interpretations. To summarise, Arabic language skills are required to identify errors in Sunnah interpretation, and more research on Arabic language skills among deviant groups is needed.

An Investigation to the Persistence Rate of Youth Unemployment in Nigeria | Chapter 7 | Emerging Trends in Engineering Research and Technology Vol. 6

The rising youth unemployment in Nigeria is indeed disturbing as engagements of unemployed youths in armed robbery, kidnapping, Boko Haram, prostitution and other related social ills in Nigerian society are attributed to high rate of unemployment. The stated involvement in crimes by the unemployed youths does not only constitute social problems to the entire society but obstructs the development of the country. The main objective of this paper is to examine causes of youth unemployment in Nigeria as it relates mostly to moral bankruptcy in public leadership. Secondary sources were being used as the data for this study and it sets its analysis in the context of the neoliberal theory. The results of this study revealed that youth unemployment is caused mainly by corruption among the public office holders that has led to the degrading nature of infrastructures, insecurity, and neglect of agriculture. This study therefore recommends among other things that Nigerian government ought to make its educational system self-reliance for the youths through the introduction of vocational and technical courses. Above all, Nigerian government should insist that its society has the enabling environment for business activities to thrive and that may as well accommodate investors and other businesses globally.
