The Impact of Chronic Diseases on Attitudes towards Aging among the Chinese Elderly |Chapter 4 |Contemporary Research and Perspectives in Biological Science Vol. 2

Background: With the acceleration of the global aging process, how to actively respond to the problem of population aging has attracted increasing attention from the academic community. Previous studies have shown that chronic diseases and attitudes toward aging are two important factors affecting healthy and positive aging.

Objective: To understand the prevalence of chronic diseases and attitudes towards aging among the elderly, and to explore the relationship between these two factors.

Methods: On the basis of reviewing previous literature, this article clarifies the concepts of aging attitudes and chronic diseases, analyzes the impact of chronic diseases and aging attitudes on the lives and health of the elderly, and based on this, elaborates on the impact of chronic diseases on the aging attitudes of the elderly and its impact pathways.

Results: As a result, suffering from chronic diseases has a significant negative impact on the aging attitudes of elderly people. Compared with elderly people who do not suffer from chronic diseases, those who suffer from chronic diseases have a more negative tendency toward aging attitudes. The impact of chronic diseases on attitudes towards aging is mainly achieved through frequent physical pain and discomfort, a significant decline in daily living abilities, increased treatment burden, and misconceptions about the disease.

Conclusion: Suffering from chronic diseases is one of the important reasons for elderly people to develop negative attitudes towards aging.

Intrinsic Capacity of the Elderly: Connotation, Measurement, Status and Key Influencing Factors | Chapter 1 | Disease and Health: Research Developments Vol. 6

In the context of "healthy aging", strengthening research on the intrinsic capacities of the elderly, quickly and accurately evaluating them, objectively identifying factors that affect their decline in intrinsic capacities, and improving their intrinsic capacities through optimization measures can minimize the adverse health consequences and contribute to the healthy aging.

Objective: To understand the current research status of the intrinsic capacities of elderly people and provide a basis for targeted and personalized elderly care services.

Methods: A literature search was used for cross-sectional or cohort studies on the connotation, measurement, incidence rate and influencing factors of the internal ability of the elderly published in Chinese and English in the past 10 years in six databases, namely PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, China Biomedical Literature Database and CNKI.

Results: A total of 59 papers were included. The research on the intrinsic capacities of elderly people is still in the stage of exploring theoretical models. The research hotspots include the concept of intrinsic capacities, theoretical support, connotation dimensions, and construction of evaluation systems.

Conclusion: Studying the health status of elderly people from the perspective of intrinsic capacities not only meets the requirements of WHO for healthy aging, but also can build a foundation in the field of geriatric medicine a health security system that better meets the needs of the elderly population. The construction of standardized evaluation tools has to be strengthened, as well as multi-center, large sample longitudinal surveys and randomized controlled trials.

Social Isolation of the Elderly: Current Status, Influencing Factors, and Countermeasures | Chapter 1 | Current Progress in Arts and Social Studies Research Vol. 7

Objective: To understand the current status and influencing factors of social isolation among the elderly, and to explore the improving strategies.

Methods: A literature search is used to organize and analyze 40 papers. Firstly, the concept of social isolation, the status of social isolation among the elderly, and its impact on the health and life of the elderly were introduced. Then, the characteristics, influencing factors, and consequences of social isolation among several elderly populations were emphasized. Based on this, the intervention research at home and abroad was compared.

Results: The incidence of social isolation among elderly people abroad is 20.5% to 52.7%, while that in China is 28.4% to 35.9%. Compared with ordinary elderly people living with families, "empty nest elderly", "elderly people who have lost their only child", and elderly people who receive institutional care are more likely to experience social isolation (P<0.001), and their levels of depression are also higher (P<0.001). The influencing factors of social isolation for the elderly are extremely complex, involving multiple levels of physiology, psychology, and society.

Conclusion: Social isolation has a profound impact on the physical and mental health and quality of life of the elderly, and requires comprehensive intervention from multiple aspects such as national and local policies and financial support, facility allocation and environmental creation by communities and social groups, material assistance and emotional support from families, and active participation of elderly people.

Optimum Reverberation Time of Classrooms for Incomplete Hearing People Using Speech Intelligibility Tests | Chapter 8 | Theory and Applications of Engineering Research Vol. 7

Because speech recognition performance is significantly lower at the age of nine or younger, and age over 65. The acoustic performance standards of classrooms for these people, incomplete hearing people, should be investigated separately. This study derives the appropriate reverberation time of classrooms for both lower-grade elementary school pupils and elderly in Korea. A virtual sound field was created by computer modeling using normalized classrooms of Korean elementary schools. A total of five classrooms with reverberation times from 0.6 s to 1.2 s were produced by varying the sound absorption coefficient of the ceiling. Auralized sounds were produced by synthesizing anechoic sounds of words in a virtual sound field. Speech intelligibility tests were undertaken with 20 young pupils and 50 elderly people. As a result, it was concluded that the reverberation time suitable for lower-grade classrooms of elementary schools should be below 0.6 s because test scores were significantly lower when RT was longer than this value. Also reverberation time below 0.8s was suggested for the learning space for elderly people.
