Cheerleading and the Making of Team-Spirit | Chapter 15 | Anthropological Explorations of Gender, Identity, and Economics

Cheerleading is one of the typical representatives of collective sports, usually 10 to 30 people in a team. It extraordinarily pays attention to the cooperation between team members, because there are great safety hazards when doing some difficult throwing skills. The team spirit among members is accordingly very important. Increasing the frequency and duration in daily training is one of the typical ways to mold team spirit, but doing some team building activities is also a very special and useful way. Create the exclusive memories of team members by conducting some group games and activities regularly or irregularly, such as having dinners, holding parties, in their spare time, or carrying out relevant folk activities on holidays. And when one of the team-building activities becomes the tradition of the team, the collective memory will be more institutionalized and transmitted to the new members. This will also better help them integrate into the team. Use these memories to shape the recognition of the team and make the team more cohesive. Therefore, by using the theory of "collective memory", this paper analyses and discusses the shaping and impact of team building activities in the collective sports represented by cheerleading.
