Enhancing Banking Stability: Leveraging Artificial Neural Networks to Prevent Non-Performing Assets | Book Publisher International

Banks play very useful and dynamic role in the economic life of every modern state. They are an important constituent of the financial market. They have control over a considerable part of the stock of money and their lending and investing activities cause changes in the quantity of money in circulation which in turn influences the nature and character of production in any country. In fact, a country’s economic progress is judged and determined by the progress of its banking system. To quote Bhaba (1956), “banking is the kingpin of the chariot of economic progress. As such its role in expanding economy of a country like India can neither be underestimated nor overlooked.”

The winds of freedom and change sweeping across the financial sector due to reforms have thrown open several challenges to the banks and financial institutions. The major challenges relating to introduction of prudential norms, technological up-gradation and transparency, improving operational efficiency in the deregulated interest rates, reduction of non-performing assets (NPAs) for survival in the competitive market and product innovation. (Reddy et. al., 2002; Ghosh, 1995). One of the major causes of low profitability is the high presence of NPAs in Indian banking. Going by the number of committees, expressions of concern, papers, programmes, etc. perhaps the issue of NPA has become problem number one continuously for about a decade in the banking industry. (Chhimpa, 2002).

One of the major hurdles Indian banking is facing today, is its ever-growing size of NPAs over which the top management of almost each bank is baffled. On account of the intricacies involved in handling the NPAs, the ticklish task of assets management of the bank has become a tight rope-walk affair for the controlling heads, because a little wavering ‘this or that side ‘may land the concerned bank in trouble (Banmali, 2001). Gujral (2003) described NPAs problem as one of the greatest and the most formidable problems that has shaken the entire banking industry in India like an earthquake. Narsimham Committee report of 1998 has also pointed out that NPAs of the banks constitute a real economic cost to the nation as the scarce capital is locked up in unproductive use and consequently adversely affects the recycling of funds with the banks.. The spiraling and the devastating effect of NPAs on the economy has made this problem an issue of public debate and of national priority as well. Therefore, any measure or reform on this front would be inadequate and incomprehensive, if it fails to make a dent in NPAs reduction and stall their growth in future, as well (Gujral,2003).

Managing NPAs is perhaps the greatest task ahead of Indian bankers as well as planners. Over the years many strategies have been chalked out to control its menace, but resulted in limited success. Although total elimination on NPAs is not possible in banking business owing to externalities but their incidence can be minimized. It is always wise to follow the proper policy for appraisal, supervision and follow-up of advances to avoid non-performing assets (Reddy et.al.,1999 and Naik,2001; Muniappan ,2002;. Sood,2001; Kulkarni,1999; Singh,2002; Rao, 2002; Bose, 2005) .To control NPA menace, preventive measures would be necessary. One of the preventive measures is credit appraisal and credit audit. Credit appraisal usually suffers from failures to : a) assess promoters ability to adapt to change, understand  industry  and market  and raise adequate margins, b) forecast sale, and c) monitor end use of funds, cash flow etc. Documentation of credit policy, credit audit immediately after sanction and human resources development through training interventions are some of the measures necessary to upgrade quality of credit appraisal in banks (Taori,2000).Therefore, the key to handle the huge volume of NPA lies with the efficient decision making at the branch as well at the corporate level.  In this context the implementation of adequate Information System is highly essential and desirable as banking industry in India is on the accelerated path of computerization (Godse, 2002).The focus in this book is  on the development of Information Technology driven decision system to manage the new loan assets, which is to be sanctioned by the banks. Configured ANN Models(Artfiical Neural Networks) tryto overcome   these problems and provide support to decision makers in Banking  field.

The methodology is based on the results of the extensive survey of financial analysts, from the academic and banking field, as well as on the international and national literature concerning Non–Performing Assets. The aim is initially to identify and select the criteria (financial ratios and qualitative criteria) that are the most appropriate to use in the evaluation of NPA, in a second stage, to achieve the modeling of the selected criteria and its estimation, and in a third stage representation of knowledge based on modeling. Finally there is development of neural network  followed by  validation  and refinement of the network .

It is found that majority of the factors identified through the primary survey match the factors collected from the secondary sources. However, some new factors like borrowers dealing with the bank, experience in the same line of business, repayment period, no of installments, no of years of experience in business management, track record of repayment of loan , net sale to total loan ratio, general administrative expenditure to total expenditure ratio etc. are also surfaced during the primary survey.

A technique of numerical representation of knowledge is presented by modeling the selected criteria variables. The test data (i.e. Applicant Data) is given a number representation using the modeling criteria and estimation process. Two neural networks have been trained to classify this data. This results into a technique for solving classification problems. A classification procedure applied to twenty-six criteria variables is also developed.   It is found that the Perceptron network only isolates NPA and PA cases. As a refinement the Probabilistic Neural network is used to isolate the doubtful cases as well. Whereas in the Perceptron network the error percentage is found to be high this gets reduced considerably in the PNN.

The artificially generated random data set is used in the absence of realistic training data set. It is felt that the performance of the neural network will be significantly improved if realistic data sets are used for training the network. In this case network will approximate an expert. A practical limitation in training the network is that one could not use huge training data sets (this could be an inherent limitation of MATLAB or system resources). It may be possible that   if we train the network in a batch mode the error level may significantly dropped.

It is possible that in future the credit granting process may become more complex and other parameters will be found to be more important in establishing the credit worthiness of the loan applicant. In that case the number of criteria variables may significantly increase .The classification process i.e. the finding the NPA and PA applicants will remain the same. However, other fields may be incorporated by modifying the system design and software by following the outline given in the work. For creating the database Ms-Access is used where database security is minimum as it is a DBMS. Whereas the  RDBMS such as Oracle, SQL Server has more data security features. In realistic situations we recommend that these databases should be used so that Applicant confidentiality is maintained. However, with certain minor changes this program which is written in VB6.0 will work with any RDBMS.

It is suggested that both network should be run as it is not possible to say a priori whether a case is doubtful or not. It is possible that by increasing the layers of the perceptron accuracy of the network can be increased. However, we have not examined this possibility because increasing the number of layers will require higher processing speed cpu and more memory which may not available in all banks. Further the time to train/setup the network will be significantly increased. Using realistic training data sets can also reduce the error level. Further; this technique can be generalized to solve other classification problems such as investment decisions, risk management, financial analysis, etc.

Comparison of Face Recognition Using PCLDA and Neural Network | Chapter 9 | Advances and Challenges in Science and Technology Vol. 9

Facial acknowledgment is a complex multidimensional building that demands sophisticated computing methods for authentication purpose. In this paper, we present the Integral Normalized Gradient Image (INGI) algorithm with differing normalizing stages. The system includes a novel illumination indifferent preprocessing method, a hybrid Fourier located feature extraction and corresponding process. The Pre-processing method is based in the analysis of the first imaging model, taking everything in mind intrinsic and extrinsic determinants of the human face. Feature extraction contains hybrid Fourier features gleaned from different repetitiveness bands and multiple face models. By deriving Fourier looks from three Fourier domains and three apparent frequency bandwidths, we collected additional complementary lineaments. These features are separately classified using Principal Component and Linear Discriminant Analysis (PCLDA). This approach allows in analyzing a face representation from the various directions for identity recognition. Furthermore, we suggest multiple face models established different eye positions with a unchanging image length. This contributes considerably to enhancing the performance of the projected system. Recognition is realized through Euclidean Distance and Neural Network based classifier, resulting in a acknowledgment accuracy of nearly 89.23% for the Euclidean Distance classifier-based model and 93.40% for Back Propagation Neural Network Classifier.

Studies for a Graphics Engine with an Artificial Intelligence System | Chapter 5 | Advances and Challenges in Science and Technology Vol. 9

The potential of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning electronics has been surveyed in various sectors through continuous research projects. It is proposed in this place chapter to use a Deep Q-Network (DQN) to train a convolutional interconnected system using Q-Learning. The idea search out develop an invention that enables a virtual figure to learn through experimental approach, similar to the habit humans learn. The aim of the study search out achieve a more unrefined and effective interplay between humans and in essence entities and further to cultivate a thorough understanding of the fundamental ideas and methods associated with the unification of artificial intelligence into graphics generators. This research represents a meaningful step towards creating a self-education virtual character that can communicate seamlessly with persons. If successful, this approach can supply a basis for automating and optimizing time-consuming tasks individuals perform outside a preprogrammed intellectual capacity. The authors demonstrated a education process similar to a "counterpart to sample task." In this process, the character must recall just what tasks were rewarded. As the character repeats the tasks, they inquire the same occurrences that lead to rewards. This paper presents a well-examined concept that could precede for automating laborious processes that bodies without a preprogrammed intellectual competency perform. The success concerning this research could bring about a more efficient and effective habit of interaction 'tween humans and in essence entities, ultimately improving the quality of growth.

Taguchi and Neural Network Analysis for Predicting Abrasive Wear Behavior of Carbon Epoxy Composites | Chapter 3 | Recent Progress in Science and Technology Vol. 7

In this study, an approach for calling the three-body nasty wear behavior of unfilled and element filled element fabric supported epoxy composite using two displaying techniques - Taguchi reasoning and artificial interconnected system are presented. A set of experiments were transported using an orthogonal array established Taguchi techniques to achieve data in a reserved manner. The results showed that the adding of graphite coarse into carbon binding material composite led to a decrease in its caustic wear resistance, and the wear deficit increased accompanying an increase in abrading distance and loads. To investigate the effect of control limits on the wear behavior of the composites, an reasoning of variance was acted, and the S/N ratio was determined. The results found that the normal load had the best physical in addition to statistical influence on the nasty wear of the composites followed by abrading distance and stuffing content. To predict the wear possessions of composites as a function of testing environments, 3-[5]1-1 neural network architecture accompanying Levenberg Marquardt (LM) training treasure was used. By equating the correlations obtained by Taguchi reversion analysis and affected neural network accompanying the experimental results it was raise that the artificial neural network thinks the wear rate better than regression reasoning. Therefore, a well-trained pretended neural network system maybe very helpful in judging the weight deficit in the complex three-body abrasive wear position of polymer composites.

A Handbook on Healthcare Applications | Book Publisher International

With the rise in great dossier, machine intelligence has enhance specifically main for answering questions. Machine learning uses two types of techniques: directed education and alone education. Clustering is ultimate prevailing alone education method. Classification and Regression are directed education methods. Clustering algorithms attempt two broad groups: Hard grouping and soft grouping. K-Means, K-Mediods, Hierarchical grouping, Self-arranging Map are few of the hard assembling arrangements. Fuzzy C- Means, Gaussian Mixture Model are gentle grouping forms. In categorization question, the classes grant permission be twofold or multiclass. A multiclass categorization problem is mainly challenging cause it demands a more intricate model. Most ordinary categorization algorithms involve Logistic Regression, k Nearest Neighbor (kNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Neural Network, Naïve Bayes, Discriminant Analysis, Decision Tree, Bagged and Boosted Decision Trees. Regression algorithms contain Gaussian Process Regression Model, SVM Regression, Generalized Linear Model and Regression Tree.Depends on the request, few questions demand pre-handle and addition. Real-world datasets maybe dirty, unfinished and in a difference of layouts. Hence Pre-treat should before resolving the question. Machine learning is an persuasive system for verdict patterns in large datasets. But more generous data influences additional complicatedness. As datasets become larger, it is owned by decrease the number of facial characteristics. The three most usually secondhand range decline methods are: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Factor Analysis and Nonnegative form factorization. The acting of the method seemingly increases when machine intelligence algorithms is secondhand. Selecting a machine intelligence treasure is a process of experimental approach. The particular traits of the algorithms contain Speed of preparation, Memory custom, Predictive veracity on new dossier, Transparency or interpretability.

Improvement of PID Controller Based on Expert System (Neural Network)| Chapter 4 | Novel Perspectives of Engineering Research Vol.7

The proportional integral derivative PID controller was improved with the use of a Neural Network and simple hardware implementation, which will improve the control system in our high-turnover industries. The multilayer perception model is the most often used neural network model (MLP). Because it requires a desired output sequence to learn, this sort of neural network is known as a supervised network. However, we present a non-linear control of a stochastic differential equation to Neural Network matching in this paper; the model has been validated, analysed, and compared to other current controllers. The objective is to have control systems in our process industries that can achieve, improve, decrease waste, and are more flexible in terms of conversion level, as well as track set point change and reject load disturbance. This research is a first attempt at designing a simplified neutral network and proportional integral derivative PID control system for a class of non-linear processes, as well as characterising their operational features. Finally, by remodelling the proportional integral derivative PID controller with Neural Network Technique and connecting the plant process control, we were able to achieve a good result where all of the traditional proportional integral derivative PID controller's features were retained and improved using MAT-LAB. The result was great since the process industries' waste and loss were dramatically reduced to a bare minimum.

Bank Term Deposit Subscription Recommendation Using Cross-validated Neural Network | Chapter 1 | New Innovations in Economics, Business and Management Vol. 2

Term deposits can help to accelerate the financial field by increasing profit for both the bank and the customer. The bank's promotion efforts, as well as the customer's background information, often affect term deposit subscription. If the bank can identify clients' subscription tendencies early on, it can change its fundamental strategy to attract additional customers. The current work has focused on identifying term likelihood prediction from the customer's perspective in this setting. Machine learning-based algorithms have been used to predict term deposit investment opportunities in advance for this study. Neural network, a common machine learning-based method, is proposed as the predictive model in this study, along with stratified 10-fold cross-validation methodology. Other benchmark classifiers such as k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Decision tree classifier (DT), and Multi-layer perceptron classifier (MLP) are also implemented and compared to assess the efficiency of this model. With an accuracy of 88.32 percent and an MSE of 0.1168, this comparison analysis found that the suggested model outperforms existing baseline models in terms of prediction results.

An Approach of Neural Network Model for IMC Based PI Controller for a Nonlinear pH Process | Chapter 8 | Challenges and Advances in Chemical Science Vol. 2

pH management is one of the most difficult difficulties in the process sector because of the very considerable nonlinearities in the system's behaviour. In the literature, several approaches to pH control have been presented. This research proposes regulating pH using an internal model controller for a pH process based on a neural network model. Modeling the pH process is considered a difficult task since it necessitates knowledge of the components and their nature in the process stream in order to replicate its dynamics. This research proposes and applies a neural network model based on the first principle equation of nonlinear pH to successfully manage the pH process using IMC-based PI.

An Investigation of Fuel Qualification by Using Quartz Sensors| Chapter 3 | Recent Developments in Engineering Research Vol. 8

Benzene and polyaromatic hydrocarbons are the air-toxic pollutants of primary concern. Both have been identified as mutagenic and carcinogenic. The system based on electronic nose technology is aimed at Using a sensor array to detect and distinguish complex vapour mixtures. A variety of non-specific sensors with slightly different or overlapping responses to each other make up the sensor array. For vapour, a series of quartz crystal sensors modified by chemical materials were introduced. Detecting. The vapour sensor array was employed to qualify the fuels in this analysis. This was done in order to differentiate certain common fuels and also to assess the adulteration rate of fuel. The analyses were all carried out at room temperature. Only up to one sensor response was consumed, Minute for a period of calculation. It was possible to infer, after statistical data analysis including Principal Component Analysis and Neural Network approaches, that the sensor array is capable of distinguishing highly reproducible fuel vapours and determining the rate of fuel adulteration with high reproducibility. Correlation in linear. The findings show that this vapour sensor array can be used as a fuel content screening test. The next research should discuss low-cost and compact dry air instead of nitrogen as a reference gas.
