Effectiveness of Probiotics for the Treatment of Urinary Tract Infection among Women in Bangladesh | Chapter 4 | Medical Research and Its Applications Vol. 3

 

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) occurs more in women than men. Escherichia coli are responsible in most cases. The microbial (Lactobacillus) species which inhabit in the vaginal tract play an important role in the prevention of infection. Irrational use of antibiotics contributes to changes in antibiotic susceptibility patterns of pathogens. Hence, the administration of probiotics exogenously may cause colonization of Lactobacillus in female urogenital organs. The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of probiotics in the treatment of UTI among women in Bangladesh. This interventional, prospective, non-randomized trial was conducted among women suffering from UTI in the department of Pharmacology and Gynecology of Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh from January 2019 to June 2021. A total of 162 women who suffered from UTI were enrolled to receive probiotic, antibiotic and probiotic+antibiotic treatments. Urine culture and sensitivity tests of all participants were done during enrollment. Patients came for follow-up visits on day 30 of completion of therapy and the final study population was 132. Among the 132 participants, the mean ages were 34.23 ± 14.28 years (mean ± SD). The average duration of UTI prior to enrollment was 77.61 ± 288.59 days. 93.18% of patients complained burning sensation of urination, pain or pressure in the back or lower abdomen (67.42%) and fever (37.12%), respectively. During enrollment, the urine R/M/E test revealed that most of the urine samples showed no growth of organisms (84.8%) and E. coli (09.85%). The most commonly used antibiotic was nitrofurantoin (43.33%), cefixime (18.88%) and ciprofloxacin (18.88%). During follow-up, urine sample culture revealed no growth of pathogenic organisms in 131 (99.24%) and E. coli in one patient who was treated with only probiotics. The present study revealed that the use of probiotics is effective and safe in treating UTIs in women in Bangladesh.

Molecular Identification of Lactic Acid Bacteria in Indigenous Fermented Pig Fat: A Case from Assam, India | Chapter 7 | Innovations in Microbiology and Biotechnology Vol. 7

 In this study, probiotic bacteria in traditionally fermented pig fat (Sathu) from Karbi Anglong, Assam, were to be identified. The goal of the study is to examine the significance of food to the population by determining the existence of native Lactic acid bacteria and characterizing probiotic features in vitro using industry-standard methodologies. Two different bacterial species (KJc8 C8 and KJR2 C9) were isolated from the food sample. The isolates' cocci and rod-like morphology were found to be present. The isolated strains had crucial properties for bacteria to be probiotics, including resistance to inhibitory substances like NaCl (1–10%) and bile salt (0.1–1%) and a preference for acidic environments. Additionally, the isolates showed success in metabolizing different sources of carbohydrates. Probiotic bacteria species Bacillus and Lactobacillus were discovered by molecular analysis using 16S rDNA gene sequencing. The experimental results also demonstrated that there were no additional spoilage bacteria present and that just Lactobacillus and Bacillus species predominated in the food sample. This offers compelling proof that the food product might include probiotics. Beyond its nutritional implications, additional investigation into the food item will be a milestone in the economic advancement of civilization.

Carcass Characteristics of Commercial Broiler Chicks Affected by Probiotic Supplementation | Chapter 4 | Research Aspects in Agriculture and Veterinary Science Vol. 3

 The goal of this study was to see how probiotics affected the carcass characteristics of commercial broiler chicks. The study looked at two probiotic levels (without and with probiotic supplementation). The probiotic groups had two replicates in the trial. At the 6th week of age, the carcass characteristics and conformation traits of broilers were assessed. The data was evaluated based on the number of survivors and the number of birds in each subclass. Because the differences between replicates for the different variables under research were not significant after analysis of variance, all following analysis was done on a combined sex basis. The results of the current investigation on percent shrinkage, percent dressing, percent giblet, and total percent meat yield revealed a substantial influence on males, females, and combined sex basis when probiotics were included. Most carcass components in the control group had a higher percent yield than those in the probiotic-supplemented diet. The cut-up components yield (leg, breast, back with neck, and wings) were almost identical in the control and probiotic supplemented dietary groups, and the percentage was likewise lower in the probiotic supplemented food group than in the control group. The treatments had no influence on the moisture, fat, or ash content of the meat, according to the proximate principles of the meat. The protein content of broiler diets containing Probiotics, on the other hand, was dramatically lowered. Lactobacillus counts were greater in the probiotic-fed groups than in the control group.

Mucosal Open Cavities: Organs Supported by Specific Microbiocenoses Increasing Human Resistance | Chapter 12 | Recent Progress in Microbiology and Biotechnology Vol. 4

 New aspects of safety mechanisms for the human mucosal cavity are under consideration. It has been proposed that mucosal cavities act as mucosal organs on the basis of their own data. Progress in developing thoughts about the identification and binding of glycoconjugates by mucosal organs is reflected. New mucosal organ players were suggested and identified. Probiotic/symbiotic lectins and probiotic/symbiotic microorganisms were included in the system and glycoconjugates were synthetic polymeric multi-valence patterns. Lectins and glycoconjugates (mucin-like or imitating, antigens, polysaccharides and other metabolites of high molecular mass and postbiotics) were suggested to connect to other non-antibody-origin glycoconjugate-recognizing molecules and receptors of the higher hierarchical defence systems of humans. Proposed ideas, techniques, approaches, methods and algorithms endorse the definition and sub-concepts of working ordered mucosal organs identifying and reversibly binding glycoconjugates. The data is useful for the construction of unique pro/synbiotic microbiocenoses ordered by biotope for use in medical biotechnology.

Evaluation of the Effect of Probiotic Supplementation on Economics of Feeding in Broiler Rabbits | Chapter 8 | New Perspectives in Agriculture and Crop Science Vol. 3

 The current research was performed in broiler rabbits to examine the effects of probiotic dietary supplementation on feeding performance. At the age of 28 days, three dietary therapies were randomly and fairly allocated to 30 rabbits. Each treatment consisted, therefore of 10 rabbits. T1 as a monitor (Basal diet), T2 (Basal diet + 0.5 g probiotic) and T3 (Basal diet + 1 g probiotic) were the three dietary therapies. The total duration of experimentation lasted 8 weeks. Observations on the feeding economy of broiler rabbits have been reported. Results showed that at the 12th week the return on feed costs (Rs.) was the highest in T2 (116.1) with a mean body weight of 2.086 kg, followed by T3 (105.42) with a mean body weight of 2.067 kg compared to control group T1 (107.11) with a mean body weight of 1.964 kg. At week 12, the return on feed costs (percent) was the highest in T2 (53.35), followed by T1 (51.72) and T3 (46.79). The lowest in T2 (132.01) was the average weekly feeding cost (Rs.)/kg weight gain, followed by T3 (135.81) and T1 (142.90).
