Diagnosis of Soil Limiting Factors for Cocoa Trees in Southern Côte d'Ivoire: Approaches for Optimising Production in Azaguié | Chapter 9 | Agricultural Sciences: Techniques and Innovations Vol. 6

 

Cocoa is the essential raw material for chocolate production and provides several health benefits. Regular consumption of Cocoa has been shown to improve mood, prevent blood clots, premature cell ageing and the development of cancer in the human body. In recent years, cocoa yields in southern Côte d'Ivoire have stagnated or declined, highlighting the need to identify factors limiting production. This study aimed to identify the key soil characteristics that limit cocoa yields in Azaguié, with a view to improving production. The study was conducted in a field of Azaguié cocoa trees (5° 37’29" N, 4° 09’ 01" W) in southern Côte d'Ivoire. In a cocoa plantation, a topographic sequence (oriented N45° - L: 200 m) comprising a summit, upper slope, middle slope and lower slope was selected for the study. On each topographical segment, pseudo soil pits were dug at the foot of the cocoa trees (1 metre from the trunk). Soil samples from depths of 0–30 cm were taken and sent to the laboratory for physical and chemical analysis. The average values of the soil parameters for the topographical segments were compared using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The pH levels range between 5.2 and 5.8, indicating highly acidic soils at the top and acidic soils at the bottom of the slope. Good potassium levels (K+: 0.3–0.6 cmol.kg-1) and moderate calcium levels (Ca2+ : 2.3–2.9 cmol.kg-1) were noted, compared with very low magnesium concentrations. Except for the soils at the summit, which have unacceptable phosphorus levels (P: 29.7 mg.kg-1), the soils at the top, middle and bottom of the slope are depleted in P, organic matter (OM) and nitrogen (N). The attachment sites for exchangeable bases on the ground at the bottom of slopes are moderately occupied (V: 27%). The addition of lime and organic matter in the form of well-decomposed compost is recommended to improve cocoa tree yields. This study was necessary as it highlighted certain chemical parameters of the soil that are linked to the suboptimal yields of cocoa trees. However, the physical characteristics of the soil in the study area still need to be evaluated in future studies.

Late Season Sugarcane Genotype as Affected by Irrigation Water Deficit at the Yield Formation Stage in Ferké, North-Eastern Ivory Coast | Chapter 12 | Current Topics in Agricultural Sciences Vol. 5

 In order to evaluate sugarcane growth and yield response to irrigation water deficit imposed during the yield creation stage, a field trial was conducted in Ferké 2 Sugar mill plantations in northeastern Ivory Coast. The first ratoon harvest was a non-flowering late-season sugarcane cultivar (Co957). The study used a randomised complete block design with four water shortage treatments in three repetitions. It was discovered that the ideal water deficiency was 20% of typical watering treatment. That treatment resulted in a water use efficiency of 7.9 kg cane/m3, or 0.98 kg sugar/m3. A protracted dry season occurred during the yield formation stage, resulting in lower crop growth rates (0.2-0.4 cm/day) and cane yields (24.5-78.4 t/ha). Cane juice quality was notably excellent on the variety employed, which performed moderately under Ferké 2 farming settings, in keeping with the prevailing climatic circumstances.

Infant Feeding in Rural Areas of Koro, North Cote D’Ivoire: A Community Solution Perspective| Chapter 9 | Selected Topics in Humanities and Social Sciences Vol. 3

 In the rural parts of Koro, this article attempts to establish a community diagnostic and design implementation strategies for the control and improvement of newborn feeding and infant health. In Côte d'Ivoire, infant feeding is a serious child health issue. As a result of this predicament, a participatory community health method was implemented in Koro's rural area. It was a qualitative study with the Koro community as the focus group. Social mobilisation, community diagnosis, and the reparation workshop are the three components of the study. As a result, the most pressing issues surrounding newborn feeding in the United States have been addressed. The problems in the community, as well as their remedies, were recognised, and an action plan for healthy infant feeding was created. The rejection of colostrum, non-observance of exclusive breastfeeding, incorrect introduction of supplemental foods, the burden of fieldwork demand on mothers, and early discontinuation of breastfeeding are among the most pressing issues. The key remedies evaluated based on the replies received include: teaching the community's mothers to change their ways. Supporting mothers in the process of dietary diversification and quitting breastfeeding by changing their perceptions about colostrum. In order to improve newborn feeding, an implementation action plan based on a dynamic and community collaborative structure was created. It looks to be useful as a health monitoring tool for the Koro rural community.
