Nebivolol is one of the most recent β-blocking agents and it
has vasodilating effects which may be useful in hypertensive patients with
heart disease of ischemic (restriction in blood supply) origin or with erectile
dysfunction. It is a third generation, long acting and highly selective β1
adrenergic receptor antagonist. It has a unique action that distinguishes it
from other beta blockers. It increases the release of nitric oxide (NO) which
produces vasodilatation via β3 receptor agonism. It improves endothelial
function, which delays atherosclerosis. It improves arterial compliance and
reduces peripheral vascular resistance and also reduces heart rate without
improving maximal exercise tolerance. These effects are beneficial in
hypertension and angina pectoris.
