Evaluating the Coping Strategies among People Living with HIV/AIDS in Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Kaduna State, Nigeria | Chapter 3 | Research Highlights in Disease and Health Research Vol. 2

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is individual of the most difficult and bewildering social challenges met by contemporary institutions because of its powerful links to sexual and social stigmatised behaviour. The purpose of this study search out evaluate the coping blueprints among community living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Kaduna central lawmaking district, Nigeria. The study was a transection descriptive design. The mechanism used was Brief COPE (Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced). Problem-focused managing strategies aim to correct or eliminate the causes of stress while affection-focused coping methods are meant to manage with the affective belongings of the hassle. Using a multi-stage sampling method, a sample of 407 participants the one attended antiretroviral clinics was captured from four general nursing homes within the district. The mark population of 10,321 cases served as the action for calculating the sample size. The study's key judgments showed that PLWHA use the question-focused coping method appropriately, accompanying an overall mean of 2.61, and that most of bureaucracy have been acting to try to improve the position. The PLWHA also use the affection focus coping approach appropriately, with an overall average of 2.65, and the plurality of them have taken emotional support from others. However, the use of preventing coping plan was the most low, with an overall mean of 2.82, and the majority of ruling class blamed themselves for the condition. The study told that problem and emotion focus were sufficiently used, while eluding strategy was thickly used. It was therefore urged that health laborers use a variety of methods to experience the PLWHA, particularly on hospital days, on how to use question-focused coping blueprints in order to develop their quality of life.

Effect of Moringa oleifera on Atherogenic Lipoprotein Indices of HIV Infected Adults on Tenofovir-Based Antiretroviral Regimen in UPTH, Nigeria | Chapter 1 | Challenges and Advances in Pharmaceutical Research Vol. 5

The use of the antiviral regimen Tenofovir (TDF) based (Tenofovir/Lamivudine/Efavirenz) for the treatment of HIV has been linked to dyslipidaemia, which is linked to cardiovascular problems and a shorter life span. The study assessed the impact of Moringa oleifera supplementation on metabolic anomalies related to HIV patients on TDF-based regimen using a randomised comparative experiment. The RCT was a trial with two arms that depended on time (intervention TDF-M and control TDF-NM). Out of the 140 individuals that were recruited, 56 were in the TDF-M group (received the Moringa Supplement) and 84 were in the TDF-NM group (control). At baseline, while at lower levels, more than 50% of the patients had abnormal atherogenic lipoprotein indices (Log [TC/HDL-C] = 85.7%; TC/HDL-C = 58.5%; and LDL-C/HDL-C = 51.4%). The proportion of TDF-M individuals at CVD risk has decreased. Following the administration of the Moringa supplement for 12 weeks, the proportion of TDF-NM subjects at risk for CVD increased to 53.6% (x2=26.67, P 0.001), a significant (40.4 percent) drop. Higher TGL and LDL levels were seen in CVD-at-risk HIV patients on a TDF-based regimen, which had an opposite effect on HDL levels and a detrimental effect on atherogenic indices. After 4 weeks (visit 1), the proportion changes between the TDF-M group and the TDF-NM group were not statistically different; however, after 12 weeks (visit 2) of moringa administration, the subjects on moringa had 4.67 [2.39 - 9.13] higher odds of normal API (x2[Yates]=24.688; P0.001), 2.39 [1.58 - 3.60] higher odds of normal TC/HDL-c (x2[Yates]= (P = 0.001; x2[Yates]=23.388). The atherogenic lipoprotein indices of both groups saw significant changes during the research, with the TDF-NM group showing improved values. This supports the argument for using moringa as a dietary supplement to treat dyslipidemia brought on by ART.

Ameliorating the Impact of Caregiving through Supporting Family Caregivers of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Calabar, Nigeria | Chapter 4 | Current Topics in Medicine and Medical Research Vol.4

The high prevalence of HIV in Nigeria and the degree of incapacitation at the terminal stage of

HIV/AIDS dictate the need for supporting family caregivers, who provide the principal informal longterm

care, to an ill or disabled family member. This paper investigated the ameliorative measures for

reducing the impact of caregiver’s burden on caregivers of people living with AIDS (PLWHA) in

Calabar, Nigeria. The study utilized a mixed method with convergent design and purposive sampling

technique guided the recruitment and data collection processes. About 260 participants were recruited

in the study and SPSS Version 16.0 and NVivo8 software were used for data analysis. Finding

revealed a high level of burden which was supported by physical, social, emotional and financial

burden themes. Limited support in reference to financial assistance, paucity of information on practical

and coping skills, emotional support and lack of physical help with caregiving. A significant

relationship (Chi-square value of 25.1, P< 0.05) between availability of support and caregivers burden

was obtained. With about 130,000 new HIV infection in Nigeria, more family members will take–up

caregiving role without adequate preparation to ameliorate caregiver’s burden. The development of

policies by Government which address the relief of the burden should be promulgated as well as the

institution of counseling services by national and international health organizations.
