Environmental and Economic Risks in the Great Lakes: Impetus to Safeguard the Greats | Chapter 1 | Emerging Issues in Environment, Geography and Earth Science Vol. 9

 The Great Lakes are currently facing consequential environmental challenges from climate change. Degradation of water quality and quantity due to climate change has already altered the capacity of the Great Lakes region to produce agriculture, decreased the ability to generate energy, and exacerbated environmental stressors such as toxic uptake. The striking vastness of the world’s largest surface freshwater resource, the Laurentian Great Lakes, has generated the fallacy that they are not highly vulnerable to climate change. This fallacy has created a great lapse in our research and understanding of the effects of climate change on the Great Lakes, which are approaching critical environmental thresholds and jeopardizing ecosystem services. This article takes the novel approach of correcting the disconnect between the perception of vastness and the reality of vulnerability to climate change in the Great Lakes and takes an additional novel step to link the water risks with the economic risks. The primary purpose is to demonstrate the interdependence of the freshwater ecosystem services affected by climate change with the economies that are highly dependent on those freshwater services in the Great Lakes region. Although many believe that environmental science or ethical arguments should be sufficient to warrant action on climate change, evidence shows that policymakers are not compelled to generate advances unless there are strong economic components. This article highlights the leading edge of climate science for the Great Lakes, having conducted 32 in-depth interviews with experts in microbiology, ecology, and limnology, among others, but it also adds substantively to previous work by providing economic evidence of water risks in the agricultural sector and energy sector, which constitute over $6trillon in value and jobs that are specifically dependent on lakes waters. The Great Lakes are vast, they are also fragile ecosystems and vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The article concludes by articulating three specific conclusions: the economic viability of the agricultural sector and the energy sector are jeopardized by the loss of federal funding for climate change adaptation in the water sector, the existing policies such as between sectors such as the Farm Bill and Energy Future Bill are mal-aligned and should be aligned with the water sector, and negative environmental externalities including factors that exacerbate climate change should be incorporated into the true cost of water so we can more accurately conduct ecosystem valuation and, thus, address the true economic and environmental cost of climate change on the Great Lakes and our greatest water resources.

Urban Development Resource Conservation and Water Sustainability| Chapter 6 | Novel Perspectives of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences Vol. 1

 We have happen a long way in delineating and understanding "sustainability," from the Brundtland Commission report being tabled in 1987 to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030. The UN SDGs are a handbook for achieving unending growth for folk and the planet. The Earth's money are being depleted faster than always before, but technological advances in differing fields have raised our knowledge and knowledge of in what way or manner to mitigate the antagonistic effects. Globally, it is detracting to gain citizens' support in consideration of achieve referring to practices or policies that do not negatively affect the environment, social, and business-related sustainability for all stakeholders. This is a record of what happened paper, and while all aspects of a liveable city, to a degree safety, well-being, security, and foundation, are necessary for some city to function effectively, the paper's focus act water sustainability. From floods in Kerala to drought in Vidarbha and Chennai being exhausted of potable drinking water, the mood change crisis is signifying that water sustainability through integration of the water phase is essential. Rotterdam, Denmark, is a city that has taken steps to form itself more resilient, tenable, and livable. Water is included into Dutch city planning, and society participation is heartened through waterfront growth and community prosperity activities. The current paper analyzes one specific effort by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, that has incorporated the Dutch Model of water administration by constructing property held ponds. The importance and request of Bio-Swales are also utterly explained. Participatory preparation and implementation will aid downtowns in becoming more acceptable and sustainable.
