Clinical Perspectives on Range of Motion in Orthopedic Conditions | Chapter 3 | Medical Science: Trends and Innovations Vol. 5

Orthopedic conditions such as osteoarthritis, rotator cuff injuries, and ligament tears are commonly associated with restrictions in Range of motion (ROM). These limitations can lead to joint stiffness, pain, and altered biomechanics, often resulting in compensatory movements that increase the risk of secondary injuries. In therapeutic contexts, restoring and optimizing ROM is a primary goal. Rehabilitation programs, including physical therapy and manual techniques, aim to enhance joint mobility, improve functional capacity, and reduce the risk of complications such as contractures or muscle imbalances. This review aims to explore clinical methods of measuring range of motion, the role of clinical observation and patient-reported outcomes, reliability and validity of ROM assessment tools and interventions related to a range of motion in orthopedic conditions to improve patient outcomes.

Management of Post-Operative Pain and Quality of Life of Total Knee Arthroplasty Patients: A Prospective Study | Chapter 5 | Challenges and Advances in Pharmaceutical Research Vol. 5

 

The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of pregabalin on post-operative pain management and patients with osteoarthritis' (OA) quality of life (QOL) after total knee arthroplasty.

The orthopaedics department conducted this prospective observational research. There were two groups each with 96 patients. 50 patients in Group A are treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), while 46 patients in Group B are treated with pregabalin. Over the course of six months, the research participants were given the knee injury and OA outcome score (KOOS) and visual analogue scale (VAS) questionnaires once every 60 days. The effectiveness of the therapy was assessed by comparing the follow-up score to the baseline score. In many cases, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are regarded as the best first therapy for OA.

The results of the study showed that the Group Bin VAS pain score at the conclusion of the study was 2.560.34 and the KOOS pain score was 92.733.45 (p0.01). When compared to Group A, the QOL score considerably increased to 81.565.29 (p0.01). According to the study, participants in the pregabalin + NSAIDs group improved their pain, symptoms, and quality of life faster than those in the NSAIDs alone group.
