Management of Post-Operative Pain and Quality of Life of Total Knee Arthroplasty Patients: A Prospective Study | Chapter 5 | Challenges and Advances in Pharmaceutical Research Vol. 5

 

The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of pregabalin on post-operative pain management and patients with osteoarthritis' (OA) quality of life (QOL) after total knee arthroplasty.

The orthopaedics department conducted this prospective observational research. There were two groups each with 96 patients. 50 patients in Group A are treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), while 46 patients in Group B are treated with pregabalin. Over the course of six months, the research participants were given the knee injury and OA outcome score (KOOS) and visual analogue scale (VAS) questionnaires once every 60 days. The effectiveness of the therapy was assessed by comparing the follow-up score to the baseline score. In many cases, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are regarded as the best first therapy for OA.

The results of the study showed that the Group Bin VAS pain score at the conclusion of the study was 2.560.34 and the KOOS pain score was 92.733.45 (p0.01). When compared to Group A, the QOL score considerably increased to 81.565.29 (p0.01). According to the study, participants in the pregabalin + NSAIDs group improved their pain, symptoms, and quality of life faster than those in the NSAIDs alone group.

Study about Diabetic Neuropathy: Current Concept and Future Perspectives | Chapter 12 | Current Aspects in Pharmaceutical Research and Development Vol. 5

 In underdeveloped countries, diabetic neuropathy (DN) is one of the leading causes of blindness. Currently, one out of every five diabetic patients may be diagnosed with DN. In clinical practise and clinical trials, assessing DN has proven to be complex and challenging. Unfortunately, there is no one treatment for neuropathic alterations or pain relief that can be used to avoid or reverse them. Intensive glucose control, risk factor management, and genetically configuration are the three main therapy options for diabetic neuropathy. Amitriptyline and duloxetine have now been discovered as effective pain relievers in DN. However, there is an increasing need for research to analyse the most effective medications and combinations for the treatment of DN in order to maximise pain alleviation and improve quality of life. Nav antagonists, N-type calcium channel blockers, NGF antibodies, and angiotensin II type 2 receptor antagonists are all viable options for DN treatment. Modifying risk factors, genetics, and treatment of DN are all discussed in this topic.

Gabapentinoids for Chronic Pain: A Comprehensive Review of Current Literature on Efficacy, Safety and Withdrawal | Chapter 14 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 8

 Gabapentinoids, such as pregabalin (LyricaTM) and gabapentin (NeurontinTM), are anticonvulsants that have been licenced to treat chronic pain disorders such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, and fibromyalgia. They are also often prescribed off-label for chronic low back pain. Prescriptions for gabapentinoids have risen dramatically in the last five years, but the evidence for their effectiveness is mixed, and both of these chronic pain conditions will be examined separately. The rate of adverse events and the safety profile will be investigated. To determine if gabapentinoids have the potential to cause harm in addition to offering adequate pain relief, researchers looked at case reports of severe adverse effects. Additional case reports describing severe withdrawal syndromes are available. It will add to the body of evidence and identify areas where research is incomplete in order to balance the benefits against the risks. The analysis of evidence of efficacy, adverse events, and removal would result in practical recommendations for assessing gabapentinoid care for chronic pain.
