Centella asiatica in Oncology: An Ancient Herb with Modern Anticancer Promise | Chapter 9 | Pharmaceutical Science: New Insights and Developments Vol. 5

Centella asiatica (L.) Urban, also known as Gotu Kola, has been traditionally used in Asian medicine for wound healing, neurological disorders, and skin conditions. In recent years, emerging scientific evidence has illuminated its remarkable anticancer properties. This chapter provides a critical review of the phytochemical constituents of Centella asiatica, their underlying mechanisms of action in various cancer types, in vitro and in vivo experimental findings, and the challenges associated with clinical translation. Emphasis is placed on the herb’s molecular targets and potential synergism with conventional chemotherapeutic agents (James & Dubery, 2009).

Development of Brahmi Leaves (Centella asiatica) Incorporated Health Mix for Improving Undernutrition and Intelligence among Children | Chapter 03 | Emerging Trends in Disease and Health Research Vol. 2

 In India, children suffer from a high rate of malnutrition. Growth failure, higher morbidity rates, decreased life expectancy, decreased cognitive function and development, decreased learning capacity, poor academic performance, inadequate adult efficiency, and diminished economic growth are all consequences of undernutrition in children. For kids, the health mix is the most popular, practical, easy-to-prepare, and healthy cuisine. This chapter focuses on the development of a less expensive and more nutritious health mix for children in order to improve their nutritional status and cognitive function. The basic materials were obtained, processed, powdered, and blended into five different health mixes. The nutritional and sensory properties of the created health mixtures were evaluated. According to the findings, the health mix III with a combination of multi grain such as redrice (25 g), bajra (25 g), greengram (20 g), soyabean (10 g), riceflakes (10 g), jaggery (8 g), and brahmi leaves (2 g) received significantly higher scores and was also chosen as the best in having high amounts of essential nutrients such as protein (14.9 g), fat (1.68 g), iron (6.52 g), zinc Furthermore, the prepared health mix variation III received the highest rating in several sensory attributes, with results equivalent to the control sample. As a result, thehealth mix, which is made up of a variety of multigrains and brahmi leaves, is one of the most practical food formulae for supplementing undernourished infants. Future research into the use of such supplements to improve the nutritional status and cognitive function of malnourished children is encouraged.

Evaluation and Pharmacological Screening of Endophytic fractions of Centella asiatica Linn Leaves for In-vitro Antioxidant Activity | Chapter 8 | Current Aspects in Pharmaceutical Research and Development Vol. 6

 We isolated fungal endophytes from Centella asiatica Linn leaves, then fermented and extracted the endophytes with non-polar solvents such as chloroform, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. An invitro free radical scavenging activity experiment using reducing power, DPPH, and hydroxyl radical assays was followed by a preliminary phytochemical examination of endophytic crude extracts of leaves to evaluate the presence of primary and secondary metabolites. The chloroform fungal endophytic fractions were subjected to column chromatography using a gradient elution method in order to isolate a putative secondary metabolite. The reducing power of endophytic extracts of C. asiatica Leaf (CAL-1) (50-450g/ml) increased with increasing concentrations. The reaction of CAL-1 with DPPH radicals demonstrated good scavenging activity. 30.33 g/ml, 66.58 g/ml, 79.33 g/ml, and 96.39 g/ml were found to be the IC50 values for ascorbic acid, chloroform fraction, ethyl acetate, and n- butanol fraction, respectively. In the hydroxyl radical assay, the IC50 values for mannitol, chloroform fraction, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol fraction were determined to be 121.06 g/ml, 141.21 g/ml, 181.80 g/ml, and 189.90 g/ml, respectively. The antioxidant activity of endophytic crude ethyl acetate fractions was much higher than that of other fractions. As a result, ethyl acetate fungal endophytic fractions of Centella asiatica Linn leaves may be employed as an antioxidant to combat oxidative stress generated by free radicals. More research is needed to identify and describe the possible polyphenolic chemicals found in endophytic extracts, as well as their mode of action in the treatment of free radical-induced oxidative stress.

Medicinal Plant Centella asiatica (Mandukaparni): From Farm to Pharma | Chapter 2 | Trends in Pharmaceutical Research and Development Vol.4

 

Centella asiatica (L.) Urban Apiaceae (Mandukaparni or Brahmi or Gotu kola) is a medicinally
important, creeping, perennial plant. This species is widely distributed throughout temperate regions,
but is occasionally also found under high rainfall tracts of subtropical India. Recently, it is considered
under threatened species as mentioned by IUCN. In this investigation, we have carried out a critical
evaluation to assess the phytochemicals, proximate analysis, antioxidant properties, antimicrobial
activities and pharmacological importance of elite commercial accession of
C. asiatica. A superior line
(ZFB 4) was selected and designated as cv. Zandu Brahmi and used for agronomical field studies.
This line showed improved growth and yield with 1.351% total triterpenoid content. Leaves
accumulate triterpenoids progressively, reaching maximum values in about 90 days and thus
facilitating 3 or more coppicing of leaf crops in a year. Cultivation practices were developed through
several years of experimentation as under-crop in mango orchards and were found profitable. The
crop grown under shade of themango orchard produced a dry yield of 5.52 metric tonnes/ha from 6
coppicings per hectare in 2 years. Under artificial shade net (75%, Black) condition, 100:50:0 kg
NPK/ha was found optimum, recording a maximum dry weight yield of 2.16 metric tonnes ha
-1 year.
The crop cultivated in the open field conditions witnessed lowerdry yield (3.28 MT/ 6 coppicings/2
years) shoot biomass yield when compared to mango shade conditions. Interestingly, open field
grown crop produced higher triterpenoid content (1.13-2.47%) when compared to mango shade
grown plants(1.06-1.71%) under three seasons (Kharif, Rabi and Summer) studied. Further studies
will be helpful to discover more bioactive compounds for various pharmaceutical uses beyond its
traditional medicinal use.
