Application of Advanced Filtering Algorithm to Enhance the Power Quality of Photovoltaic System | Chapter 3 | Theory and Applications of Engineering Research Vol. 3

This study presents a state-estimation based effective compensation strategy for enhancing performance of employed Active Power Filter (APF) scheme. The latest advancements in photovoltaic technology like reduced panel costs, higher efficiency and improved tracking schemes have provided a driving thrust resulting in enormous PV penetration. With the photovoltaic (PV) system becoming highly popular in distribution network, there is also a growing concern regarding its adverse impacts over the power quality (PQ) of integrated system. This deterioration in PQ has sparked a new interest in the filtering techniques used in the power system for mitigating these problems. In contrast to conventional passive filters now APFs are being looked as the predominant solution. The enhanced filtering performance has been also signified by comparing the harmonics elimination capability of various Kalman Filtering (KF) algorithms. A novel control technique for PQ enhancement is proposed where KF approach has been applied for generating the reference signals. Here, an adaptive hysteresis band technique has been applied in the switching strategy which has reduced the complexities in generating reference current. Thus, an enhanced filter performance is achieved with reduced harmonics and better elimination of distortions. Simulated results obtained in MATLAB/Simulink platform have been analyzed completely, where the superiority of filtering algorithm has been also demonstrated through least THD achieved in source current among all the existing filters technologies.

Study on Harmonic Identification and Mitigation Using APF in Distribution System Consisting of Single Non Linear Load | Chapter 13 | New Visions in Science and Technology Vol. 8

Using an Active power filter, this work presents a novel way for balancing source side current harmonics in power systems produced by the presence of nonlinear characteristic loads (APF). Because of the advanced, nonlinear, and non-stationary nature of systems that contain a large number of diverse constraints, optimising capacity system networks using traditional mathematical modelling based on primarily linearized methodologies is difficult. To avoid the complication of traditional concepts, this paper proposes the application of Total Harmonic Power (THP) to two complete cases with and without APF, i.e. identifying the harmonics and reducing their effect with APF to lower the supply current Total harmonic distortion (THD) sufficiently below fifth order to satisfy the IEEE-519 standard even when the offer is distorted. MATLAB simulations and comparative analyses were utilised to compare scenarios with and without APF management approaches employing THP control strategies. The new alteration was tested in a number of case studies and found to be effective. Furthermore, to minimise the potential for inaccuracies in estimating harmonic powers caused by computing phase shifts between harmonics.

Harmonic Current Identification by Adaline Neural Network and Real-Imaginary Instantaneous Powers Algorithm | Chapter 6 | Recent Developments in Engineering Research Vol.5

This work focuses on the extraction of harmonic current and the compensation of reactive power using the shunt active power philtre (SAPF). An algorithm based on (ADALINE) Neural Network and Real and Imaginary Instantaneous Forces (ANN-RIIP) is designed to extract and classify harmonic components in order to achieve this goal. In addition, this algorithm independently estimates the total harmonic current and also the harmonic components. In the MATLAB / Simulink area, the established algorithm is validated by computer simulation and implemented experimentally in a dSPACE 1104 controller. Compared to other approaches such as pq, the approach is simple to apply in real time. The results obtained by the simulation are consistent with the experimental results, indicating that the proposed ANN-RIIP algorithm is accurate. The results have also shown that the speed and accuracy of the algorithm proposed will enhance the efficiency of the active power philtres.
