Assessing the Trends towards Predictive Mapping of Graduates’ Skills to Industry Roles in Kenya: A Case Study of Software Engineering| Chapter 6 | Engineering Research Perspectives on Recent Advances Vol. 9

 

Background: Long-term unemployment (LTU) has been a major concern in many countries, including Kenya. LTU would not be a trouble if job characteristics for each kind of worker, levels of education and skills, experience, and occupation were precisely known by new graduates. Employability of skilled graduates in the industry is a challenge not only because of the effect of unemployment duration, but also due to increased skills variation among both graduates and industry roles, emanating from the industry-academia gap.

 

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate whether industry roles in the same occupation have similar academic requirements and establish learning trends in academia towards occupational industry roles.

 

Methodology: This study was conducted in the Kenyan software engineering industry and universities in academia in the month of May 2016. A descriptive survey research design was adopted in this study. Perception from 113 employees used as respondents and 24 examinations past papers from 5 Kenyan universities, both in the domain of software engineering, were involved. Two experts, a software engineering lecturer and a pedagogy lecturer, were used to extract data from the exam past papers after their reliability test was confirmed. Both descriptive procedures and non-parametric tests of hypotheses were conducted using SPSS version 16 software and .05 as the test limit for significance. A proposed model for mapping graduates’ skills to industry roles was used as the research model for the study, while for academic requirements analysis purposes, the model’s variables were double classified into two dimensions, i.e. knowledge or skill type and domain-specific or domain-general.

 

Results: This study showed that the most common job entry roles for software engineers after graduation are 'web programmer' and 'analyst programmer'. A frequency analysis of 17 role performance activities (RPAs) performed by software engineers at entry-level industry positions reveals that ‘design database’ is the most frequently performed activity (11%), while ‘manage project workflows’ is the least performed (2%). Regarding the proposed model, findings indicated that while domain-specific knowledge (χ2=2.44, P=.87) and skills (χ2=1.86, P=.93) for industry roles in the same occupation are similar, domain general knowledge (χ2=13.10, P=.04) and skills (χ2=16.151, P=.01) are significantly different for these industry roles. Further revelation indicated that, while academia trends towards various industry roles within the same occupation are fairly good for knowledge (80%) and poor for skills (45.7%), trends towards various industry roles within the same occupation are not uniform among universities.

 

Conclusion: Academic knowledge and skills requirements for occupational industry roles are not similar, and trends towards occupational industry roles are not uniform among universities. Therefore, students should select universities that have a higher trending profile for industry roles in order to increase their chances. It is also recommended that domain-specific knowledge and skills must be covered well during learning in academia.

Dynamics of Air Temperature Changes According to Long-Term Observations of the Mikhelson Meteorological Observatory | Chapter 1 | Novel Perspectives of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences Vol. 7

 The purpose of the research search out establish the influence of all-encompassing climate warming on the action of air temperature changes in the Moscow domain. The article verifies the main theory about regional trend warming based on the reasoning of unique unending long-term notes of air temperature in the period from 1879 to 2022 in accordance with the data of the Mikhelson Meteorological Observatory. The currents of changes in air temperature by annual and migratory values for 144 age are presented, which signify its increase all the while the entire note period. It is settled that almost all the considered mathematical series maybe characterized by the sane random variables distribution society. Cyclical changes in air temperature over all order relative to their enduring average values and the periods of meaningful temperature increase were revealed. The ending’s falls on the last three decades both comparatively to annual values and their migratory time intervals, utilizing statistical tests, it was found that the periods are miscellaneous both to former years of observations and to the whole long-term succession. Such fact determines the warming of the climate of the domain over the past decades, exceptionally in winter. Positive changes in the aspects of the thermal balance destine the need for research on the possible expansion of the region of agricultural crops for culture in the Moscow region. Based on a inclusive analysis and probable conclusions, a hypothesis has happened put forward about the influence of city development on the increase in air hotness, however, it is not possible to base the share of such influence, in addition to the share due to added factors.

Focality of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) from the Chronology to the Trend Analysis in Villa Clara Province, Cuba: A Recent Study | Chapter 7 | Issues and Development in Health Research Vol. 1

 The study's goal was to characterise the time series and trends for the Aedes aegypti mosquito's focality in Villa Clara province, Cuba, by months and years (2007-2017). In Cuba, the prevalence of these parasitic and viral diseases is unquestionably a public health issue, with a propensity to increase the number of patients as well as vector organism populations. The study looked at the province's 13 municipalities and the number of breeding sites they reported during the various months of the study period. An observational, descriptive, ecological, retrospective, and statistical investigation was carried out, with all data acquired from the participants. Work cycles for vector surveillance and control in the universe of dwellings and buildings in the 13 municipalities' urban regions have been developed. With the help of the Windows Excel application, the data was organised by years and months. The data was processed using the SPSS statistical programme version 19.0 (the ENTER and ERROR techniques). The municipalities of Santa Clara, Ranchuelo, Placetas, Manicaragua, Santo Domingo, and Sagua la Grande were determined to have the highest absolute frequency (Fi), which is quite comparable to the cumulative relative frequency (fai), with minor differences in respect to the municipalities' positions. The Ae. a vector's focality, as measured in months, July through November were the months with the greatest focality, showing a direct proportional relationship with the one recorded provincially. The conclusion is that there exist natural and anthropogenic factors in Cuba that support the creation and maintenance of the Ae. a vector focality all year.
