Smart Growth for Integration of Transportation and Land Use in Planning and Revitalization of the Transforming Neighbourhoods for Sustainable Development of Urban Areas: The Case of Tanga City in Tanzania | Chapter 7 | Contemporary Research in Business, Management and Economics Vol. 2

Sustainable planning and revitalization of the transforming neighbourhoods is a way to development of sustainable cities. However, the existing knowledge and practical gaps hinder planning and revitalization of the transforming neighbourhoods in land use distribution and addressing transportation issues. This study was carried-out for the purpose of finding-out how urban land use can be properly located and transportation be improved for sustainable urban developments through planning and revitalization of the transforming neighbourhoods. The study involved qualitative research approach by demonstration as case study. Methods of data collection involved geo referencing and onscreen digitization of the case study area by using QGIS to produce a base map. GPS was used for base map updating through physical verification on existing developments on the ground. QGIS was also used for analysis of spatial data and mapping. Findings show that smart growth concept can be used for proper spatial location of the urban land use activities and transportation improvement. It is concluded that smart growth concept be used to integrate transportation and land use in planning and revitalization of the transforming neighbourhoods to achieve sustainable development of urban areas as it brings together urban land development authorities, land owners and development partners to make decisions on spatial location of the urban land use activities and transportation improvement that has been a challenge for decades. To achieve this, six smart growth principles have been recommended for sustainable development of the urban areas.

The Potential for Innovative and Smart Rural Development in the Peripheral Regions of Eastern Poland: A Recent Study | Chapter 7 | Current Topics in Agricultural Sciences Vol. 3

 Most European countries have peripheral regions, and the Community's Cohesion Policy, which strives to reduce development inequalities between Member States and regions within individual countries, has supported them for many years in European Union countries. In Poland, five of the country's sixteen voivodeships are designated peripheral districts. They are on Poland's eastern border, which is also the European Union's eastern frontier. These regions' support programmes have been elevated to the status of independent operational programmes, with an emphasis on generating convergence effects, which can be achieved by improving the degree of innovation and applying sensible economic practises. The outflow of resources, a restricted sectoral organisation, and price-taking enterprises in a dependent relationship with external customers characterise the peripheral regions. The purpose of this article is to highlight the nature of peripherality, as well as the innovative development potential of Poland's peripheral regions and the potential for smart rural development. The study is based on an examination of research findings gleaned from the subject's literature as well as official data and statistics. In addition, personal study on the smart village concept was conducted in three locations of Eastern Poland. This study found a decrease in disparities in regional development in Poland, as well as a correlation between the amount of innovation and regional economic growth, which happened with a lag in relation to innovation transfer.
