Electrochemical Synthesis of Magnetic Materials Based on Intermetallic and Refractory Compounds of Rare-Earth Metals in Ionic Melts: Current State of Research and Directions of Development| Chapter 9| Newest Updates in Physical Science Research Vol. 12

This review focuses on the electrochemical synthesis of intermetallic and refractory compounds in ionic melts using rare-earth metals, the iron triad, boron, and silicon. The widespread usage of rare earth metal-based magnets with record-high magnetic properties is impeded by their expensive cost, difficult manufacturing techniques, and the presence of rare metals. In chloride and chloride-fluoride melts, data on the electrochemical behaviour of lanthanides, iron, cobalt, and nickel chloride complexes, as well as fluoroborate and fluorosilicate ions are provided. Distinctive Characteristics ofThe electroreduction of rare-earth metal ions with iron triad ions, fluoroborate, and fluorosilicate ions is investigated. The ideal conditions for the electrosynthesis of rare-earth metal-based double and triple molecules are discussed. Future prospects for high-temperature rare-earth metal electrochemistry and technical solutions in the realm of electrosynthesis of rare-earth metal compounds in molten salts are discussed.

Assessing the Correlation of Martensitic Transformation Temperatures of Ni-Mn-Ga/Al-X Alloys to Non-Bonding Electron Concentration | Chapter 11 | Emerging Trends in Engineering Research and Technology Vol. 11

Variation in the martensitic transformation temperatures (TM) of quasi-ternary/off-stoichiometric Ni-Mn- Ga and Ni-Mn-Al-X alloys are correlated to their electron per atom ((e/a) ratios. The behavior of Fesubstituted Ni-Mn-Ga alloys is, however, anomalous. We use Pauling’s ideas on electronic structure of elements, and compute the number of non-bonding electrons (en) of elements, instead of the total number of electrons available beyond their rare gas shells. Using Pauling’s scheme and identifying Miedema’s electron density parameter (N) as the accurate valence of metallic elements, it has recently been demonstrated that cohesive and electronic properties of metallic systems can be assessed. From an extension of that approach, we show that TM for the quasi-ternary and offstoichiometric Ni-Mn-Ga-X and Ni-Mn-Al alloys systematically vary with the number of non-bonding electrons/atom(Nₑa). The anomalies in the case of Fe- and In-substituted Ni-Mn-Ga alloys disappear in the present case.
