The Use of Marine Algae as a Denture Cleanser: A Narrative Review | Chapter 3 | Research Perspectives of Microbiology and Biotechnology Vol. 6

 

Denture usage is increasing in the geriatric society, and denture stomatitis is one of the problems faced by the majority of denture wearers. Denture stomatitis is not merely a result of Candida albicans; it is formed by a biofilm of various species. Several mechanical and chemical methods have been employed, and many studies have tested the antifungal properties of commercially available denture cleansers and other agents such as coconut oil and eucalyptus oil. Marine bioactive products like seaweed have also been used. The brown seaweed Sargassum polycystum and Turbinaria conoides have antifungal and antibacterial activity. There is a need for further studies to be conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the seaweeds available.

Design and Evaluation of Acacia concinna and Sapindus mukorossi Coloaded Denture Cleanser Paste: Assessment of Antimicrobial Potential in Pre-used Dentures | Chapter 4 | Novel Aspects on Pharmaceutical Research Vol. 9

 The present study was begun with aim to formulate Acacia concinna and Sapindus mukorossi coloaded denture solvent paste and judgment of its effectiveness in pre-secondhand dentures. The denture solvent paste containing two together powders was formulated and judged for cleaning potential, foamability and antimicrobial potential against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. All batches of planned paste granted good cleaning potential as revealed from eviction of stains induced by permanent tombstones, highlighter and picric acid on eggshell. In addition to this, paste revealed acceptable antibacterial potential against two together microbial strains as well as in pre-secondhand dentures. However, in-vivo studies are necessary to envision the effectiveness of planned paste. Thus, formulated herbaceous denture cleanser maybe viable alternative to commercially available denture cleansers.
