Application of Progressive Muscle Relaxation in the Treatment of Psychosomatic Diseases | Chapter 4 | Disease and Health: Research Developments Vol. 8

Background: Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is a relaxation therapy that has been applied in the clinical treatment of psychosomatic diseases.

Objective: To introduce the concept, principle and development process of progressive muscle relaxation, with a focus on reviewing its application in the treatment of psychosomatic diseases.

Methods: Taking “Progressing Relaxation” or “Progressive Muscle Relaxation Training” or “relaxation and relaxation effect” as keywords, a literature retrieval is conducted to search for academic full-text literature published in Chinese or English in the past twenty years. The literature sources included journals, dissertations, and conference papers from databases including PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL Plus, Scopus, Embase, PsycINFO, and CNKI.

Results: Twenty-one articles were included. Previous literature has shown that progressive muscle relaxation is simple, easy to implement, has no side effects, does not require specialized equipment, and can be performed anytime, anywhere. It can reduce patients' stress levels and negative emotions, improve their physiological and biochemical indicators, alleviate symptoms, help them better adapt to treatment, and improve their quality of life. The combination of progressive muscle relaxation and other intervention methods is more effective than using progressive muscle relaxation alone.

Conclusion: The efficacy of progressive muscle relaxation is increasingly recognized, but its operating procedures need to be optimized and its combination with other therapies needs to be strengthened.

The Application of Narrative Nursing in Clinical Practice of Psychosomatic Diseases | Chapter 4 | Disease and Health Research: New Insights Vol. 11

Background: The incidence of psychosomatic diseases has been increasing year by year, and its impact on people's health and lives is growing day by day. Scientific treatment and nursing can help patients with psychosomatic diseases recover.

Objective: To understand the implementation and role of narrative nursing in the clinical practice of psychosomatic diseases, and to identify its main shortcomings.

Methods: CNKI and PubMed were searched with the keywords "narrative nursing and psychosomatic diseases" and " narrative nursing and psychosomatic diseases". This study included studies in Chinese or English published between 2017 and 2024.

Results: Forty papers were included. Narrative nursing can enhance patients' and society's understanding of disease-related knowledge, alleviate negative emotions of patients and their families, improve patients' mental health status, increase their self-management efficacy, treatment compliance, and quality of life, as well as improve nurses' work efficiency, and promote nurses' self-growth.

Conclusion: This study summarizes the application of narrative nursing in the clinical practice of psychosomatic diseases, and analyzes the role and difficulties from the perspectives of patients and their families, nurses, and various sectors of society. The results of this study have practical reference significance for promoting the rational development of narrative nursing and the scientific development of nursing work.

Implication: This study highlights the potential of narrative nursing to improve patient outcomes and enhance the overall quality of care for individuals with psychosomatic diseases.

Impacts of Stress, Emotions, and Personality Traits on Psychosomatic Diseases: A Focus on Asthma and Cardiovascular Conditions | Chapter 2 | Current Progress in Arts and Social Studies Research Vol. 10

Background: The incidence rates of psychosomatic diseases are increasing year by year, but the biomedical model cannot fully explain the pathogenesis, and the therapeutic effect is not ideal. Objective: Taking asthma and cardiovascular diseases as examples, the objective is to understand the progress of the impacts of three major psychological factors including stress, emotions, and personality traits on psychosomatic diseases. Methods: A literature search is used to retrieve Chinese or English survey reports and randomized controlled trial reports of the influences of stress, emotion, or traits of personality on asthma or cardiovascular illnesses from CNKI, Google Scholar, and PubMed. Results: Twenty-nine papers are included. Stress, emotions, and personality traits are important predictive variables for clinical parameters such as the onset, treatment compliance, severity, and recurrence frequency. Conclusion: Previous studies have provided useful opinions on the impacts of stress, emotions, and personality traits on psychosomatic diseases, with good theoretical and practical value. However, research methods need to be improved.
