Growth Analysis of Lannea kerstingii (Anacardiaceae) for Sustainable Forest Management in Northeast Nigeria | Chapter 3 | Current Research on Geography, Earth Science and Environment Vol. 3

 

Lannea kerstingii (anacardiaceae) is found mainly in the guinea and sudan savannahs and is useful as an agroforestry species and in meeting health benefits. The objective of this study is to close existing gaps in data availability for the purpose of formulating forest policy and planning in the sub-region of the study area. Twenty trees were sampled from fifteen quadrats each measuring 100m*100m and using different approaches, were measured for diameter at breast height, crown area, crown ratio, height and volume. Statistical analysis of the data generated was carried out using the coefficient of determination(r) and pearson’s correlation (r2). There were strong positive correlations with basal area and volume, while weaker associations with crown ratio and crown area were observed. Biomass assessment provides relevant data which helps in biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, climate change mitigation, climate budgeting and financing, culminating in developing an appropriate framework for forest policy formulation, planning and development.

Allometric Regression Models for Parkia biglobosa in the Guinea Savanna of Ghana | Chapter 6 | Agricultural Sciences: Techniques and Innovations Vol. 3

 

Parkia biglobosa (Jacq.) R. Br. ex G. Don f., belongs to the family Leguminosae, is a multipurpose tree and plays several important roles in the lives of the people of Northern Ghana. The rising demand for Parkia biglobosa due to its numerous benefits and the lack of active conservation measures has endangered the species in most of its natural ranges. Data on its dendrometry, which is a prerequisite for its sustainable management, are limited, especially in Ghana. This study, therefore, investigated the relationships between five dendrometry variables and developed models for predicting them. The prediction models were developed using diameter at breast height and crown diameter as independent variables. The study was carried out in the Guinea Savanna Ecological Zone, specifically the Tolon district of the Northern Region, Ghana. Ten randomly distributed trees were sampled, and data collected and analyzed using Pearson correlation and simple linear regression. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test for significant differences at a 95% confidence level. The means for stem diameter at breast height, total height, crown diameter, crown ratio and crown height for Parkia biglobosa were 1.91 ± 0.40 m, 23.23 ± 5.40 m, 19.94 ± 10.00 m, 0.08 ± 0.02 m and 14.44 ± 5.91, respectively. It was observed that stem diameter was positively correlated with all four other variables measured. The correlation between stem diameter at breast height and crown diameter was 0.69. The coefficient of determination between stem diameter at breast height and total height, crown diameter, crown ratio and crown height had R2 values of 0.16, 0.48, 0.19 and 0.28, respectively. Crown diameter, as the second indicator variable, was also positively related to total height with a correlation coefficient of 0.97 and R2 value of 0.09. The relationship between stem diameter at breast height and crown diameter was significant with an F-value of 0.03 at a 95% confidence level. The results will make significant contributions to the management of trees in the study area. However, the small sample size limits the generalizability of the results; further research involving a larger sample size is recommended to refine and validate the developed models.

A Descriptive Study on Nesting Patterns of Raptors; White Backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) and African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer), in Lochinvar National Park on the Kafue Flats, Zambia | Chapter 9 | Challenging Issues on Environment and Earth Science Vol. 5

 This study looked at the nesting habits of raptors, specifically the White-backed vulture (Gyps africanus) and the African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer), in Lochinvar National Park in Zambia. The study's main goal was to see if tree species, height, girth size, and habitat influenced raptor nest placement within Lochinvar National Park. Two species were chosen to serve as ecological indicators for all raptors. Habitat types and tree species were identified, and tree species with nests were measured. The minimum height for nest placement was discovered to be 10 meters above ground, and Acacia woodland was discovered to be the most preferred habitat for nest placement. Raptors stayed away from human disturbance, such as roads, by locating their nests at least 100 meters away from human disturbance and from the National Park boundary inwards, or by abandoning the nest if human encroachment gets too close. The construction of new roads and buildings, as well as an increase in human activity in such habitats, may cause raptors to abandon their nests. New infrastructure in the National Park should avoid areas with a high density of raptor nests because raptors have been known to return to the same nest to lay eggs. More research is needed to evaluate the nesting materials used, as well as to determine whether raptors can swap nets or return to abandoned nests when human disturbance ceases.
