A randomised prospective controlled study was done to examine if voice-related acoustical parameters may be utilised to predict illnesses in patients with laryngo-pharyngeal reflux (LPR). The acoustical software employed was a Laryngograph Ltd. sophisticated MDVP (multi-dimensional voice programme) that adjusts to well-defined sustained tones measures, standard text reading, and electroglottography. For LPR, there were three therapy groups: lifestyle adjustments (avoid acid-provoking meals), proton pump inhibitors, and an additional alginate group. The groups were blended because there was no acoustic difference between them. A comparison of the first and second consultations two weeks later, as well as a three-month follow-up, demonstrated considerable jitter reduction in MDVP measurements, as well as reduced frequency and intensity variability in reading a standard text. Electroglottography revealed no differences. The acoustic findings were unrelated to arytenoid oedema. The acoustical measurements should be refined in the future using online measurements on high-speed films.
