A Study on Water Quality of Futala Lake, Nagpur City, Maharashtra, India | Chapter 7 | Current Research on Geography, Earth Science and Environment Vol. 1

Water is very important to sustain life. The rapid growth of population, combined with technological and industrial expansion, has resulted in significant environmental degradation. Freshwater lakes, crucial for the country's economy, play diverse roles in supporting industrial, agricultural, and ecological processes. Despite the significance of lakes, rising human activities globally, including in India, are degrading the quality of lake water, posing threats to biodiversity and also to human health. This chapter deals with the study of Futala Lake water. The water of Futala Lake is debased due to substantial release of contaminated materials without acceptable treatment to expunge pernicious compounds. Water quality checking and review of the Futala Lake was implemented for numerous physico-chemical parameters in the winter season during 2015-2016. These components are: (i) pH, (ii) Electric Conductivity, (iii) Dissolved Oxygen, (iv) Biochemical Oxygen Demand, (v) Chemical Oxygen Demand, (vi) Total Phosphorous, (vii) Suspended Solid (viii) Total Nitrogen and (ix) Total Coli forms respectively. Statistical analyses, like Pearson Correlation matrix and Cluster analysis, were carried out on the dataset to determine the relationship among the studied parameters. After experimenting with the data, it shows that the maximum parameters are not in the range that is suitable for drinking purposes. So, it is clear that the water of the lake is not suitable for drinking and domestic purposes. Also, it is not suitable for waterborne species. It needs suitable measurement so that the lake water will be suitable for use.

Analysis of Shahpura Lake’s Water Quality, Madhya Pradesh, India | Chapter 5 | Geography, Earth Science and Environment: Research Highlights Vol. 1

Shahpura Lake is positioned in one of the opulent areas of Bhopal, the capital city of the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. The water of Shahpura Lake is polluted due to the substantial release of contaminated materials without acceptable treatment to expunge pernicious compounds. The present study is based on the Physico-Chemical Parameters of Shahpura Lake of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. Water samples were collected from five sampling stations namely Manisha Market (MM), Janki Nagar (JN), Manoria Care (MC), Bansal Hospital (BH) and Lalita Nagar (LN). The physico-chemical parameters such as Chloride (Cl), Total Hardness (TH), Alkalinity(A), pH(pH), Electric Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Fluoride(F), Iron (Fe), Turbidity (Td), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Sulphate (S) were examined to know the present status of the Lake water quality. Statistical analysis like Pearson Correlation matrix and Factor loadings were implemented to the data set to know the relationship among the studied parameters. Experimental data shows that most of the attributes do not satisfy the desirable limits prescribed by BIS. Hence the Shahpura Lake water is not suitable for drinking purposes.

Water Quality Analysis of Gorewada Lake Water in Nagpur, India| Chapter 4 | Geography, Earth Science and Environment: Research Highlights Vol. 1

Gorewada Lake is positioned on the northwest corner of Nagpur city. It is the most alluring lake to visit. The proper control and appraisal of lake water condition and its purification is very crucial for appropriate care and management purposes. Water quality checking and investigation of the Gorewada Lake was implemented for numerous physico-chemical parameters in the month of June 2016. Water samples were collected in the morning hours from the selected sites of the lake in plastic containers to avoid unforeseeable changes in characteristics as per standard procedure American Public Health Association. These components are: (i) pH, (ii) Temperature, (iii) Electric Conductivity, (iv) Dissolved Oxygen, (v) Biochemical Oxygen Demand, (vi) Chemical Oxygen Demand, (vii) Total Phosphorous, (viii) Suspended Solid (ix) and Total Nitrogen respectively. The obtained values of each attribute have been compared with the standard values set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The results attained show that most of the attributes do not satisfy the permissible limit recommended by WHO. Hence the lake water is not suitable for drinking, bathing and other life-supporting activities.
