A Brief Review on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus | Chapter 1 | Technological Innovation in Pharmaceutical Research Vol. 4

GDM (gestational diabetes mellitus) is a common metabolic disorder that can occur before or during pregnancy in varied degrees of severity. It's been related to poor mother and neonatal health. The prevalence of GDM is increasing globally, along with the increase of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. GDM must be detected and treated as soon as feasible to reduce or eliminate complications for both the mother and the foetus. There is a lack of consistency in evaluating and detecting GDM on a global scale. The latest current advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of GDM are discussed in this article. Treatment must be personalised to the individual, including medical nutrition therapy, additional diet, and exercise for the best results. Pharmacologic therapy, such as insulin and its analogues, should be used if these treatments fail to control blood glucose levels. Treatment with pharmacologic therapies plays an essential role in reducing GDM-related problems. In view of new evidence on the safety and efficacy of oral antihyperglycemic medications like Metformin and Glyburide during pregnancy, other oral antihyperglycemic medications like Metformin and Glyburide are also being considered.
